Publisher's Summary

An Audible Best of the Year 2023 Celebrity Memoir Selection

This program is read by the author.

“...I love him, and I respect him, and I need him. We all do.” —from the foreword, written and read by Jamie Lee Curtis

If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad’s fast-food joint that one day he’d be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he’d be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might’ve asked, “You want fries with that?”

John burst onto the scene in General Hospital, propelling him into the teen idol stratosphere, a place that’s often a point of no return. But Stamos beat the odds and over the past four decades has proved himself to be one of his generation’s most successful and beloved actors. Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.

A universal story about friendship, love, loss, and the courage to embrace love once more, John Stamos’s memoir is filled with some of the most memorable names in Hollywood, both old and new. Funny, deeply poignant, and brutally honest, If You Would Have Told Me is a portrait of a boy who went from believing in Disney magic to a man who learns that we have to create our own magical moments in life.

What the critics say

Named a USA Today "Best Memoir to Read in 2023"

“An earnest debut memoir from the General Hospital, Full House, and ER star...Although Stamos is a legitimate celebrity himself, his memoir is a lesson in humility and gratitude for the people he’s shared scenes and stages with throughout his life...A portrait of a charming and charmed actor who has received plenty of love—and who has plenty of love to give...A heartfelt, sincere memoir filled with useful wisdom.” Kirkus

“In this charming debut, Full House star Stamos reflects on fame and family...Readers will be enchanted.” Publishers Weekly

beautiful truths

i absolutely loved listening to John Stamos tell his story. I am sure there are way more details he could have shared but it’s clear he has chosen a path of honouring the chapters of his life and those he shared them with. I was particularly touched by his telling of the relationship of his beloved “Baby” and the impact Bob’s friendship had on his life.

I’ll read the sequel too! :)

This is why I buy audiobooks.

John Stamos was incredible, honest, funny and touching.

This is exactly why I don't buy books but audiobooks when read by the author, their tones, laughs and pauses give you so much more depths than the pages and our version of John reading it in our heads could.

This didn't feel long enough because it went by so fast. I highly recommend it.

Great autobiography

I have loved John Stamos since his General Hospital days. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially with him reading it himself. I was brought to tears several times. Highly recommend.

A great listen

I enjoyed listening to this book. I grew up with John (on posters in my bedroom) so it was an easy book to buy. He’s a natural storyteller and his narration made it easy to listen to.

Genuine and Heartfelt

John Stamos has had a incredible journey so far. I've listened to many bios and John doesn't read you his book. The way he tells you his story makes you feel like he's an old friend of yours. Just catching up while you're sitting on his couch, laughing and visiting over a cup of coffee. Great bio, thanks John.

I really don't know

It's like that. If it were a book from Arnold. I am sure I would have liked it and learned something. It would even have improved my life. This one I am not sure what I am supposed to do with it. It's more like entertainment than anything else. Maybe I was thinking too much about Uncle Jesse from Full House. Maybe I would have wanted to understand more why he was talking like Elvis. It's not the book that I was hoping for. It's not bad. It's just that I don't think that I will learn something from it.

It's so weird sometimes. It's like what did I bought exactly.

For someone who likes to talk like Elvis. Elvis would never speak like that.

It's not a book that I would listen twice.

Now I am just imagining what Elvis would have said in a book like that.

That would have been amazing. Much more appreciated than this one.

Sometimes people do things that they shouldn't do.

Just like this book.

Sincere and honest

This was very interesting. I watched General Hospital when he was in it and saw much of his work since then. Being able to hear his story told by him makes it even better. He tells it all good and bad. I loved this book.
