Publisher's Summary

From the producers of Smile and The Outsider comes a chilling psychological thriller starring Isabela Merced (Alien, Superman Legacy) and Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty).

Aaron Fortin is new in town. He drives a brand-new Acura—a gift from his parents for uprooting him in the middle of senior year. Showing up on his first day at the local public school in that nice of a car? He knows he’ll never blend in, and he doesn’t care to try. The car, the new kid mystique, he can use all that....

Crystal Giordano carpools to the same school in her friend Trevor’s beat-up van. In the van along with Crystal and Trevor are Paul, Harmony, and Gayle. Crystal’s technically part of their misfit group, but most of the time, she feels like she’s the only one who doesn’t fit.

When Aaron Fortin sits at their lunch table, Crystal can see he’s not who he says he is. But how big of a fraud is Aaron Fortin? Crystal clumsily exposes Aaron and becomes his target, falling victim to his insidious campaign to erase her. Only then does she discover who he truly is—and it’s so much worse than she thought.

As her friends begin to follow him one by one, Crystal wonders if she can protect them or if his influence is just too strong.

Absolute delight to listen to!

I really enjoyed the plot of this story! Many of moments of suspense. However, the ending left me wanting a little bit more explanation, and detail as to what happened to the characters afterwards.

Anxiety inducing in a really good way

This story will make you uncomfortable but it's worth it. It exposes some risks of online activity that teens may get into.
The performance is fantastic.

Pretty Good

Not going to lie, Listened mainly because of Christoper Briney but the story actually ended up being good and sucked me in and I couldn’t stop listening, the conflict ending had me on the edge of my seat

Gripping!

Started off a little “iffy” for me but I’m very glad I stuck with it. Wasn’t what I expected, but it was very good. Definitely recommend!

Great story!

I liked this book. The narrating was great, and watching the main character grow was rewarding. Suspenseful and unnerving at times. Highly recommend for a free listen!

Got hooked and couldn’t stop listening. The cover is what intrigued me. Can’t wait for the next book. Hope it’s just as amazing!

Enjoyable Manipulative Sociopath Tale

This book is a striking "Selfie Generation" story.. as such, sentenced to 100% irrelevance in about 5 years (well, it could be a story dripping with nostalgia for GenZers someday, I suppose).
Stuff like vlogging, YouTube algorithms, Instagram posting, Makeup Tutorial TikTokking, and clique-y teenagers living their lives huddled around smartphones are absolutely integral to the book. Adam Cesare injects frighteningly relatable detail into a harrowing story about a teenaged psychopath moving into a new community and wreaking havoc. Cesare won't ever win any writing awards, but the story is serviceable with a good deal of attention paid to generating tension.

Unfortunately, Audible Originals Inc. overproduces the audiobook: inserting intermittent sound effects and musical interludes. The performances from Brittany Pressley (reading the prologue), Isabela Merced (reading from the POV of generic angsty highschooler 'Crystal Giordano'), and Christopher Briney (portraying the chilling 'Aaron Fortin') are well above average.. but that radioplay mindset makes the book sound like an attempt to present an old-timey drama instead of a Psychological Thriller.

In toto, 'Influencer' merits 6.5 stars out of 10. Speaking as a Physician, I can appreciate the authentic attempt to depict Aaron's psychopathology (recognizing that it's over-the-top). Speaking as a Father, I found the description of modern-day High School depressing (Oh, God.. I hope this isn't accurate).
The recording is worth a download if you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu.. but save your Credit for something else should they ask for one.
