Publisher's Summary
Prosecutor Jessie Black has an airtight case against Tyrone Nash, a gang thug who shot a man behind a bar in West Philly. But what should be an easy trial turns complicated when Nash somehow intimidates her eyewitness, and he recants his testimony on the eve of the trial. Now Jessie's only move to stop the killer from walking is to call a witness she had hoped to avoid - Reggie Tuck, a smooth-talking jailhouse snitch who claims Nash confessed to him during a short time they shared a cell. Worse, there are other people with an interest in the trial - people intent on silencing Reggie's big mouth, permanently. Soon Jessie and Reggie find themselves trapped in a courthouse taken hostage by armed assailants. She must find a way to keep both Reggie and herself alive long enough to learn who they are and how to stop them. But is Reggie Tuck's life worth protecting at the risk of her own?

Not As Effective As Book One
The first book in the 'Jessie Black Legal Thriller Series' forced the character development a little, but the deficiencies were offset by unsurpassed courtroom proceedings (opening/closing statements in particular). In this second installment, author Larry A. Winters offers a disappointingly implausible scenario where armed gunmen seize a courthouse in a bid to silence a witness in a Capital Murder trial - without the brilliant legal combat.
Reader Xe Sands does her best to elevate the book with a spot-on performance (her smarmy, fast-talking, streetwise con man 'Reggie Tuck' is straight-up genius), but can't quite manage it, either. Still, if you are given the opportunity to get this audiobook version instead of a text iteration, do so. This product is undoubtedly better than a paper or eBook copy would be.
Altogether, 'Informant' rates 6.5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' selection, it was a serviceable way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons. Even spending a Credit wouldn't be crazy if you're a Winters überfan.. but there are better options available.
[Note: The sexually-charged near-relationship between assistant DA 'Jessica Black' and Philly PD Detective 'Mark Leary' is handled beautifully. The author could write Romance if he wanted to]
