Story
When the cultivators came to Earth, they destroyed our entire civilization in a matter of hours. Armies fell, cities burned, and that was before the moon turned red and filled our world with monsters. Now, over a decade later, what's left of humanity slaves under the heels of our Qi-infused masters. The luckiest of us might even become one of them, they say—if we serve the Dynasty well enough and harness the power of Qi. But I want none of that. I'm sick of serving, and I want nothing to do with their world. Instead, I want them to pay for what they did to mine.

Story
Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

Publisher's Summary
Seek out new life and civilizations. Kill them for their mana. Aliens are blown away by science.
Daniel Thrush is the only known human with the ability to learn the magic which runs the various empires of the universe. Earth is in the crosshairs of the Tellask Empire, a race that discovered magic millennia before humanity even mastered fire.
All known aliens focus on the arcane. Upon learning of magic, their technological progress all but halted as great voidships spread their colonies across the galaxy. For all of Earth's military might, their only hope is to incorporate the alien's magic into technology, to use the enemy's own tools to fight them.
The government is dead-set on transforming magic into a standard-issue weapon. That means finding monsters and harvesting their mana, usually after sticking them with a sword. Despite his better judgement, and the world on his shoulders, Daniel leaves Earth behind to bring them back a future.

Worth The listen and the purchase
I often roll my eyes hard at authors that auto-fill the MC's personality profile with "Alpha" bullshit. This Genre has an issue with its obsession with overly assertive MCs who would more often than not get killed in most of the scenarios they try and boss themselves out of. This MC was luckily not one of those.
This Novel was a nice breath of fresh air as the MC had major struggles with his self esteem, excess negative emotions and was often being manipulated metaphorically and literally throughout the book against his best interests. Throughout the novel what was happening to him began to unravel and he actively discovered the parts of him that were holding him back from truly moving forward. The extra point in "Mind" after he came to his epiphany near the end was a nice detail. I find myself curious at who he will become, rather than what his future abilities will be.
My biggest gripe with the book was the beginning. the first chapter is entirely too long. got the entire life story and motivations of this side character we dont see again. Its not a bad way to give exposition tho, creative. But then we got a ton of exposition a few chapters later when they were doing the training montage and it felt like...havent we already been through this before?
Good stuff overall, been awhile since I've finished an audiobook :)
