もともと端午の節句は、軒先に魔除けの菖蒲などを挿し、女性が身を清める日でした。
しかし、鎌倉時代に武家社会になると、男の子を祝う日に変化しました。一説には、菖蒲の葉の形が剣に似ていたためといわれています。
現在の端午の節句では、家に鎧や兜、五月人形を飾り、柏餅やちまきを食べ、鯉のぼりを立てて祝います。
鎧や兜、五月人形は身を守る道具を象徴し、柏餅やちまきには、家系の繁栄を願い、病気をはらう意味があります。
一方、鯉は生命力が強いことから、鯉のぼりには、子どもが無事に育つようにとの願いが込められています。©2017 KODANSHA
