Shodo means the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy, in which kanji and kana letters are written using a brush and ink.

書道とは、筆と墨を用いて漢字や仮名文字を書く、日本の伝統芸術の一つ。
正しい文字の書き方を習う「習字」に対して、書道は精神を集中させて筆を動かし、文字を美しく、芸術的に表現することに重点を置いています。
書道は中国で発展したものですが、5世紀前後の漢字の伝来とともに、日本でも取り入れられるようになりました。
当初、書道は僧侶や貴族、武士にとって必要な教養とされていました。
室町時代には書道の流派が生まれ、書を床の間に飾って鑑賞する人が増え、江戸時代には庶民の間にも広まりました。
ペンや鉛筆が普及して以降、毛筆を使う機会も少なくなりましたが、現在でも書道教室や通信教育を通じて書道に親しむ人はたくさんいます。©2017 KODANSHA
