Publisher's Summary

With Mrs. Hudson gone from their lives and domestic chaos building, the last thing Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, need is to help an old friend with her mad and missing aunt.

Lady Vivian Beaconsfield has spent most of her adult life in one asylum after another, since the loss of her brother and father in the Great War. And although her mental state seemed to be improving, she’s now disappeared after an outing from Bethlem Royal Hospital...better known as Bedlam.

Russell wants nothing to do with the case - but she can’t say no. And at least it will get her away from the challenges of housework and back to the familiar business of investigation. To track down the vanished woman, she brings to the fore her deductive instincts and talent for subterfuge - and of course enlists her husband’s legendary prowess. Together, Russell and Holmes travel from the grim confines of Bedlam to the winding canals and sun-drenched Lido cabarets of Venice - only to find the foreboding shadow of Benito Mussolini darkening the fate of a city, an era, and a tormented English lady of privilege.

Laurie King never Disappoints

Loved the latest in the Mary Russell Sherlock Holmes series. Venice in the early 30's comes to life: Cole Porter, Mousolini black shirts and masked balls. Can't wait the next one!

I will follow Mary and Sherlock anywhere

I have been reading Laurie R King for years before joining audible and I can only hope that there will many more books from her to enjoy.
The island of the mad was a wonderful trip from England to Venice, weaving engaging narrative around historic events and characters of the 1920s.
Jenny Stirling is forever going to be the voice of Marry Russel in my head, and her delivery and pacing are wonderful to hear.
Another great book from one of my favourite series.

Great Listen

Island of the Mad continues the life of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes in fine style. The book is illustrates Laurie King's love affair with Venice. I had to consult Google Maps to find my way around as I listened. The reader did a fine job of differentiating characters and sometimes I wasn't sure it was her.

Wonderful,riveting

The history in this book is amazing and the mystery is just great. You are held throughout the story. The author again brings in the gay issue, with taste and understanding. The ending will send you into cheering and laughing your head of but also living you with total surprise. Just an amazing read.
