About this listen
From the authors of the New York Times best-selling novel Welcome to Night Vale and the creators of the international podcast of the same name comes a mystery exploring the intersections of faith and science, the growing relationship between two young people who want desperately to trust each other, and the terrifying, toothy power of the Smiling God.
Nilanjana Sikdar is an outsider to the town of Night Vale. Working for Carlos, the town's top scientist, she relies on fact and logic as her guiding principles. But all of that is put into question when Carlos gives her a special assignment investigating a mysterious rumbling in the desert wasteland outside of town. This investigation leads her to the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God and to Darryl, one of its most committed members. Caught between her beliefs in the ultimate power of science and her growing attraction to Darryl, she begins to suspect the Congregation is planning a ritual that could threaten the lives of everyone in town. Nilanjana and Darryl must search for common ground between their very different worldviews as they are faced with the congregation's darkest and most terrible secret.

Story
Gav isn't really sure how he ended up with a castle full of goblins, or why he has a princess locked in a cell. All he can do is play along with his own evil plan in hopes of getting his memories back before he gets himself killed. But as he realizes that nothing—from the incredibly tasteless cloak adorned with flames to the aforementioned princess—is quite what it seems, Gav must face up to all the things the Dread Lord Gavrax has done. And he'll have to answer the hardest question of all—who does he want to be?

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

What the critics say
"[Narrator Cecil] Baldwin is in full command of the story - he knows these characters and this town, where secret police, killer librarians, and sentient patches of haze are part of everyday life. Even newcomers will find that Baldwin's conviction helps them believe in the strange world authors Fink and Cranor have created." (AudioFile)

Time well Spent
Nightvale takes you on a journey so very different from what you know but still rings true to the real life human experience. that is what it is really, Nightvale is an experience that gives your own experience a little more colour. It brings on a myriad of thoughts and feelings. the end is bittersweet because it ends but it is also a content end. cheers!

Wonderful narrator, book, series
Wonderfu narrator, wonderful book, wonderful series. Very interesting ideas in a strange and wonderful world. Deeper than I expected, though these two authors always pleasantly surprise me. A great listen.

Secret Police say listen to first book first...
By far entertaining, whimsical, strange. Few other places will offer such a dive into science vs. faith and human vs. centipede all in one (Herbert's Dune comes to mind, though that has worms instead). Good twists, had my brain loosen up a bit. The first novel was so engrossing and odd this did feel a bit lacking in comparison. I know, don't compare two kinds of imaginary pizzas, they each may have unique imaginary flavours to themselves. It did feel like a stretch around doing the science and religion thing, and that is done quite well without insulting either too much, yet I found some parts only enhanced by having listened to the first one beforehand. So I guess... if you're interested in this one, get the first one too. And listen to all their podcasts. And buy all their merchandise. The big cloud will thank you and you know you want to appease the big cloud....

good book
it was a good book, I liked the first one better and the podcast is soooo much more fun to listen to but overall decent book. one thing, spoiler warning for this book and the podcast Welcome To Nightvale, in the podcast Carlos chose to stay in the desert overworld he had every opertunity to look for a way out and he chose not to, they sorta got that messed up in the book. not too big a deal just nitpicking😝
