Adequately Entertaining
Do Not download 'Jailbird' expecting to be blown away by a pulsepounding Suspense-Thriller. What you will get is a creditable audiobook and a reasonable way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons. Caro Savage provides an interesting scenario where a traumatized/once-tortured Police Officer ('Bailey Morgan'/"Bailey Hyde") goes undercover in a prison to expose first a drug ring and then a potential serial killer. The plot is sufficiently twisty-turny to keep reader/listener attention, the main character is intriguing, and the setting is unusual.
Unfortunately, the dialogue is somewhat klunky, and the "shocking revelations" are predictable.
Boldwood Books likewise generate a distinctly average listening product (splicing of re-recorded segments is occasionally imperfect, and volume modulation efforts sometimes result in whisper-quiet chapters followed by near-shout entries). Reader Genevieve Swallow is notably professional but delivers a few headshakingly cartoonish character voices.
Altogether, this 5.5/10-star offering isn't terrible.. but appropriately available as a 'Plus' selection. When Audible asks for a Credit, you'll be better off spending it elsewhere.
[Note: the lesbian romance plotline is realistic for a women's prison story.. but feels unnecessary and moderately contrived]
