About this listen

Meddling gods. A magical card system. An apocalypse no one could have predicted.

Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that?

When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Jake, wasting his day slacking off in the cooler, as he usually did, found himself alone in a completely new and very dangerous world. Can he learn to survive? Can he collect enough cards and create a good enough deck to fight back against the monsters that have overtaken his former home? And why are these strange people that look a lot like elves knocking on the door of the market he is hiding in and asking to buy some of his goods?

The gods may have stacked the deck against him, but Jake just might have a few cards up his sleeve that will help him survive.

Kidnapping

**slight spoilers**

so first half was great though for a book called jake's magical market theres barely any mention of the market and in the last 3/4 of the book the market almost dissapears, except for him sitting in the front and raising vegetables in the back. his personality is too reminiscent of dissociative identity disorder. hes got the brave badass, who is a little too arrogant. then theres the whiny crybaby, it flipflops alot. but overall, its not a bad book, still gonna give it a listen, but it feels like a bit of a slog. hope the second is better.

Came for Travis, stayed for an excellent story

I bought this book on a whim when I saw Travis Baldree as the narrator and it looked like an interesting story, and I was hooked in the first 5 minutes. The systems of power are very well thought out and creative with the card system, which is similar to the All The Skills series, but is different in enough ways that it feels very fresh. So much happens in book one that you can't get bored, but it doesn't feel rushed. I've listened to alot of LitRPG books, and I'm genuinely excited to keep listening to this series. Straight onto book two!

Not sure yet

Interesting enough to see where the story goes. However the radical change in plot does not leave much room for the story to evolve. The main character gets too strong in book one that leaves no room for plot development. I was really looking forward to his return to earth. The massive power up could have been saved for later on in the series.

Very good!!

This story diverged from where I thought it was going. Exceptional magic system, great world building and perfect pace. The card system is deep enough to be explored and still leave questions. There aren’t pages upon pages of stats, just tiny reminders of what cards are where once in a while. Magnificent.

The “hero” somehow succeeds

Interesting story & world. It took me a while to get into the story, but I got hooked. The only other LitRPG I have read are the Azarinth Healer and The Wandering Inn series. I LOVE those series and the voice actor.

I suspect this was more challenging to get into because the main character is male, but fortunately it didn’t descend into sexist patriarchal tropes common in Fantasy & Science Fiction of the past.

The author imbues the characters with a sense of humour. I appreciate not having to listen to constant updates to stats. I look forward to listening to to the next offering in this series.
