About this listen

Children have always found a delightful friend in James Herriot. His award-winning stories for young children bring the farmyard world of Herriot's Yorkshire to vibrant life. Featuring a host of adorable animals and colorful townsfolk, each of the stories is narrated by the country vet himself, with all of the warmth, caring, and good humor that have made James Herriot beloved the world over.

Here, in James Herriot's Treasury for Children, we find all of his books for children collected in one beautiful volume. From the springtime frolic of Oscar, Cat-About-Town to the yuletide warmth of The Christmas Day Kitten, these stories—radiantly illustrated by Peter Barrett and Ruth Brown—are perennial favorites, and this new complete edition will make a wonderful gift for all listeners, great and small.

Taken together, these stories comprise a wondrous Herriot menagerie, a family treasure that will be passed, with joy and affection, from generation to generation.

What the critics say

“Dale employs a variety of entirely convincing rural accents in his portrayals of the country folk who ask for the vet's help and share their tales with him. He also captures all the kindness of the beloved Herriot in this collection for animal lovers of all ages.” —AudioFile, Winner of an Earphones Award

“Jim Dale reads the stories with his enterprising vocal delivery and melds these tender stories into emotional yet satisfying experiences that reflect both the joy of having pets and the responsibilities involved with their care. Young listeners will learn the cycle of friendship, ownership, and companionship of unconventional pets and other animals.” —Dr. Flora Joy, Parents' Choice Awards

“This charming title defines family listening…The eight short stories were selected especially for youngsters, yet adults will gladly listen along. Narrator extraordinaire Dale lends the perfect avuncular tone.” —Booklist

Timeless Classic. Superb afternoon stories.

A beautiful way to introduce children to a love of nature, animals & simpler times. The narration is brilliant. The stories are delightful & captivating. You feel as though you've just been through a walk in the English countryside after you're through. It is a breath of fresh air for the modern reader that is full of tek and toil. Forget the screens. Listen during lunch hour! Let the kids (or you!) colour or build or paint while soaking it in. Highly recommend.

Even as an adult I find these stories enjoyable and refreshing for the soul. It allows you to remember much of the beauty that was found in bygone days where vets carried black bags and went to see animals on farms in a small town. These stories capture the serenity of nature and give inspiration and hope. Jim Dale is fantastic; an overall win.

A family favourite

These stories are so beautiful. One or two of them touch on death of an animal, but always in a gentle way with a happy twist. They have been bedtime listening in our house due to the relaxing nature of them (including the soporific music) and the children all have their own favourite story. My only criticism would be the one that goes for everything on Audible - the lack of chapter headings so you cannot easily find the story you're looking for. Here they are in case it's of help:
1.Moses the kitten.
2.Only one woof.
3.The Christmas day kitten.
4.Bonny's big day.
5.Blossom comes home.
6.The market square dog.
7.Oscar, cat-about-town.
8.Smudge, the little lost lamb.

Delightful 😊

Hi, I truly have enjoyed every bit of it, and I'm an adult. So, yes, it is a delight for kids as well as grownups. Thus, I recommend the whole collection to all animal lovers.

Last but not least, the narrator did a GREAT job.

Thank you for these precious farmyard tales🙏
