Publisher's Summary

For the first time Gacy’s lawyer and confidant tells his chilling tale of how he defended an American serial killer.

“Sam, could you do me a favor?”

Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Surprising naive author

The author is the defense attorney of Gacy. It is interesting to learn his perspective. Not surprisingly, he is defensive, “ I am just doing my job”. Frequently, he is simple, uncultured, and unsophisticated. A little too much sympathy to the perpetrator and too little respect or information about the victims. You will also hear your village uncle’s opinion about trans people, which coincides with the author’s opinion. Still a captivating story to listen to!

What a story

First of all, the narration is world class, and was absolutely fantastic in capturing the serious tone of the book. The story itself was captivating. One of the best I’ve listened to on audible.

not bad, performer sighs unnecessarily A LOT

Story was good. Speaker ruined it by constantly sighing when not needed. I would have deleted the d/l due to that, but finished because I had nothing else d/l.

Amazing

I was captivated by this whole experience.
I understand some of the descriptions in court in regards to LGTBQ+ do not appeal to the day in age that we are in now. But the story is being told from the perspective of the 80’s. Things were not as accepted or discussed or even understood than. While it does not make it right, It does not change my opinion of this reading.
It was well wrote, very descriptive, answered a lot of questions.
The narrator was amazing. I could actually picture myself in some of the moments just on the description and narration alone!
10/10

Likely to listen again in the future.

Product Of Its Time

A truly intriguing deep dive into one of the lawyers behind the team who defended JWG, a monster who rivals the boogeyman our parents warned us about. Overall the story told is captivating, the narration done alright but could have been better. There was a moment that particularly ruffled my feathers in how a transwoman was addressed in court as to vilify her and paint her out to seem like a deceitful being simply for living her truth. While this did take place in the 70's, this was published in 2011. With that, I give it a little less wiggle room. LGBTQ+ folks, be aware this may be a rough listen for more than the tragedies that befell victims.
