About this listen

Sixteen-year-old Princess Leia Organa faces the most challenging task of her life so far: proving herself in the areas of body, mind, and heart to be formally named heir to the throne of Alderaan. She's taking rigorous survival courses, practicing politics, and spearheading relief missions to worlds under Imperial control. But Leia has worries beyond her claim to the crown. Her parents, Breha and Bail, aren't acting like themselves lately; they are distant and preoccupied, seemingly more concerned with throwing dinner parties for their allies in the Senate than they are with their own daughter.

Determined to uncover her parents' secrets, Leia starts down an increasingly dangerous path that puts her right under the watchful eye of the Empire. And when Leia discovers what her parents and their allies are planning behind closed doors, she finds herself facing what seems like an impossible choice: dedicate herself to the people of Alderaan--including the man she loves--or to the galaxy at large, which is in desperate need of a rebel hero...

Great writing, great reading

When I was deciding whether or not to get this title, I saw a review where one person complained how the reader gave Tarkin a Scottish accent (which he does not have in the movies). I can understand how that could be distracting, but Saskia Maarleveld is a really good reader and I thought maybe she was just bringing a fresh take to the character.

It's NOT Scottish. Peter Cushing rolled his "r"s, as many English actors of his generation did, and for his performance as Moff Tarkin in A New Hope, he embraced that particular quality of his natural voice. It's part of what made his performance so iconic. Saskia Maarleveld does an excellent job of capturing Cushing's "Tarkin voice" - as much as any early middle-aged woman from New Zealand can capture a 65 year old English man's voice. Besides, it's not a book about Tarkin, it's a book about Leia, and I dare anyone to criticize Maarleveld's portrayal of Leia.

Come on - it's Claudia Grey and Maarleveld, what's not to love!?! If nothing else I promise you that you'll have a more nuanced understanding of Amilyn Holdo. Also, Briea Organa is a badass. Objective fact.

A neat story.

I enjoyed this story, knowing that it would add yet more flavor to the starwars canon. I have few issues with the story itself. It was all I expected, in that it didn't venture far from all the things we already know about Leia and her parents in the time before A New Hope. I suppose my greatest complain would have to be the performance. while most of it was fine, Grand Moff Tarkin simply doesn't have a Scottish accent, and to read him as having one is very distracting. As there are relatively few characters in this book who's voices a fan would know, I wish more effort and consideration would have been put in to sounding like the characters we are here to experience.

Good Not Great

I feel like Claudia Gray doesn’t know the smart, strong, independent Leia that we all know and love. The reader was good but I would have preferred one with a deeper voice - more like Carrie Fisher - and who read dialogue in the way it was described (for example, dialogue that was described as monotone was not read monotonally).
