Publisher's Summary
In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers - including Barney and his wife, Sandy - trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure. In fact, only a third of all the hikers who set out on the trail that year would finish.
As the group approaches Canada, a storm rages. How will these very different hikers, ranging in age, gender, and background, respond to the hardship and suffering ahead of them? Can they all make the final 60-mile push through freezing temperatures, sleet, and snow, or will some reach their breaking point?
Journeys North is a story of grit, compassion, and the relationships people forge when they strive toward a common goal.

A gem!
Mann is a gifted storyteller who's able to infuse his story with the perfect amount of drama and comic relief. He has captured the essence of a thru-hike by presenting multiple individual experiences from endearing characters from different walks of life. The narrator told the story as if it was his own.

A long walk
Long distance hiking isn’t anything I would aspire to, so this was a good way to get experience it. I learned a lot. I found myself a wee bit confused at times, as everyone has two names, their real name and their ‘trail name’. The audio was ok, but edits were not seamless, as they were either done by a different narrator, or done in under different conditions. It was jarring to hear different voices.

Different, but so very good
This book is quite different than most other trail books I'd read because it includes multiple groups of central characters. I found the first few chapters hard to get through, afterwards though, I looked forward to every opportunity to listen further. It might be favorite trail book now.

I would give it 3.5 stars
I enjoyed this book, but some parts were more interesting than others. There were so many characters and the story jumps around between them, so at times it was hard to follow. The narrator did a good job, but his voice didn't seem like a good match for the main character. I wish we could see pictures of the characters in real life. I was able to search online and find a group photo, so that was satisfying.
