About this listen

"Joyland is a breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking book.... Even the most hardboiled readers will find themselves moved."
—Charles Ardai, Edgar- and Shamus Award-winning editor of Hard Case Crime.

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

Brilliant story

I have listened to this audiobook several times over the last couple of years. Michael Kelly might be my favorite narrator of all time. He really captured the emotions and nostalgia this story required. Well done sir. Stephen king had given us a unique coming of age story with a hint of the supernatural his constant readers love. One of my favorite King stories of all time.

Perfectly Read

This is beautiful. Michael Kelly brings the story to life with his reading: perfect pace, character voices and tone. This is my first Stephen King novel on audible and it rocked.

Good Book BUT Reader Beware...

Solid book overall. King does a great job telling a story which covers many themes under a very "cause and effect" plot structure. If you're looking for a book that contains elements of coming of age, getting over a broken heart, summer vibes, mystery, and horror, this is it. BUT READER BEWARE the description of the book, as well as the cover art, leads one to believe that the horror and mystery elements will be at the center of this story. THEY ARE NOT. Being generous, only about 1/6 of the book concerns these themes. This is not a carnival of horrors story. This is the story of a 21-year-old man and his summer working at an amusement park, getting over heart break, meeting new people and building relationships, with a minor ghost story thrown in and a less minor murder mystery thrown in.

excellent coming of age story with a mystery

Loved this audible. The narrator did a great job and pulled me right into the story, reminiscent of Stand by me. Highly recommended!

Exceeded Expectations

This was the first Stephen King book I ever read (well listened...) and it truly exceeded my expectations. I'm sure most readers would enjoy this, but I would recommend it to a younger male more specifically. This isn't necessarily what I or most would consider "hard case crime" but a great story nonetheless. Also, the physical copy illustrated version for this is absolutely fantastic!!

Great book SK! Highly recommend.
