Publisher's Summary
From the author of the best-selling Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood series comes a tough new heroine who is far more than she seems.
After the Final War, after the appearance of the Bug aliens and their enforced peace, Shining Smith is still alive, still doing business from the old scrapyard bequeathed to her by her father. But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets that she has guarded for years.
This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. Until the only friend left from her previous life shows up, dead, in the back of a scrapped Tesla warplane. Clutched in her cold fingers is a note to Shining - warning her of a coming attack.
With dread, Shining realizes: Someone knows who she is. Someone knows what she is guarding. Will she be able to protect the scrapyard? Will she even survive? Or will Shining have to destroy everything she loves to keep her secrets out of the wrong hands?

Exciting new kick-ass heroine in a novel context
Loved this new heroine! But then Faith Hunter has my undying loyalty for all her great stories. Shining Smith is infected with nanobots that give her novel problems and novel abilities. She's assisted by an enormous semi-robotic former astronaut and a slew of sentient cats. And that's just for starters! The author's imagination knows no bounds and this post apocalyptic world is so technologically detailed it takes several listens to really appreciate it. Can't wait for the next installment!!!

Started clunky but hit a good groove
the first of a (so far) four-part series, the world is a dystopian wasteland where our heroine, Shining Smith, lives a life of lonely seclusion in an old junkyard that is littered (pun intended) with mutated cats and repurposed weaponry. Smith is a mutant herself, and she’s in hiding…or at least she was, until her lone contact to the outside world is delivered to her doorstep, brutally murdered. The world-building in this was clunky and awkward, and you’d think our female lead was written by a man: she’s tough, she’s fearless, she’s independent…and then then at first sight of a man, she’s weak-kneed and dripping. Also she curses weirdly and it’s off-putting; for what it’s worth, though, Khristine Hvam is a talented narrator and the dialogue just between our ragtag group of heroes is entertaining as all get-out. I will definitely give Part Two a chance in the near future. GRADE: B

Junkyard Catawesome
I love Faith's Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood series, this universe is wonderful and I am hooked. When she let us know she was writing Sci-Fi I decided to read it because she wrote it, I am not a huge Sci-Fi reader. I am wonderfully surprised that I actually enjoyed the Sci-Fi side of the story, I am not at all surprised that I love the story and characters because that is what Faith does, she writes great characters, story plot and cats.
thanks Faith

not my style
well written, well read, just not really my type of book.
I would recommend it if you like short, post apocalyptic war torn worlds, with aliens thrown in.

great story and reader!
Motorcycles, snarkey A.I., fiendish cats and fun characters and unique Post Apocalyptic world. edgy, fun, great battle scenes and banter. reader has good pacing and is dynamic and strong. Her mature-sounding voice is womanly and suites Hunter's badass female characters, not annoying and whiney like so many other female readers that ruine audiobooks. I'm greatful Hvam is The Storyteller for Faith Hunter. I just wish this series was longer than the novella style!
