About this listen

On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London.

Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. He was treated as a spy, a god, a welcome stranger, and a curiosity. The extraordinary trip became a journey into his own soul, and for many others - including the bikers Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor - it is a pure inspiration. Rupert Degas, "the most versatile of narrators" (The Times), captures all the thrills and spills of Simon's experience and the timeless charm.

Great recollection of a world no longer there

Really great first half of the book, but it tends to get a bit difficult to read from the moment the author arrives in Asia.

But overall highly recommended!

Come for the adventures but stay for Simon’s vivid observations of the world

As an ADV rider, the motorcycling adventures and misadventures are interesting. However, Simon’s honest observations of people and places are the real hooks that grip you until the last page. He writes with flair and vividness throughout. The audio delivery is excellent with the narrator slipping in and out of accents with ease to keep it entertaining. Strongly recommended!

Kind of depressing

I found the author seemed criticize everything and everyone that wasn’t English. This didn’t feel like a happy story like most travel chronicles, it felt like the author had a job to do and riding around the world was just something to complete.
