About this listen

The Greek empire. A Jewish rebellion. A musically gifted girl strives to overcome the brutal siege of a contested land.

Maccabean Israel, 135 BCE. Judean orphan Keziah has been traumatized by a savage war. As the Greek empire invades Jerusalem with battle elephants and a ruthless army, the 12-year-old witnesses her parents' violent murder by their once-trusted neighbours. Keziah has no time to mourn when she's forcibly transported to the far north and ripped away from everything she's ever known.

Struggling with her new life in a vibrant Galilean community, Keziah reconnects with music and the possibility of happiness through an abandoned lute. But as rising unrest and bloodshed engulfs the region, her lifetime of troubles and heartbreak may be just beginning.

Keziah's Song is a generation-spanning, lyrical historical fiction novel. If you like sweeping depictions of ancient eras, high-stakes conflicts, and beauty found amid tragedy, then you'll love Daryl Potter's compelling tour de force.

Revelatory Epic

The story of violence, war and redemption set in the last few centuries of the ancient world. The author skillfully keeps the language spare and crisp allowing the reader to paint their own canvas that the main character (Keziah) inhabits. We are immersed in her story from the first enthralling chapter to the last and not given much time to breath in between. I am reminded of Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. That is as high praise as I can think of for historical fiction.

I recommend this audible version as the narrator evokes the text powerfully and gives added pleasure to an already visual story. One can lay back and let Potters world appear take form. Brava to Kristi Alsip

Deeply sympathetic and remarkably well researched

This story takes us into the lives of avery believable and richly portrayed set of characters during a fascinating period of history largely ignored by most. The struggles, trials, tragedies and adventures of the characters in this book speak in a very believable way about the journey of life during difficult times and provide a brilliant speculation on possible motivations and mechanisms for known historic events. Very well narrated.

Brilliant.

Transported to a time I knew (know) nothing about. A descriptive journey filled with meaning.
