About this listen

What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

The murder carries all hallmarks of one of her most famous incarcerated clients, ‘The Playground Killer’ (aka Alfred Dinklage) – namely the location of the body and the tongue being ‘forked’ like a snake with scissors. Buckley has a race against time to unpick the facts and delve into Dinklage’s often manipulative, complicated mind to understand his past to understand the present events – whilst striving to prevent further murders...as someone out there will stop at nothing to complete what they see as Dinklage’s work.

Featuring: Kathryn Anderson, Shaun Aylward, Rob James, Collier, Angela Griffin, Lara Hutchinson, Christopher John-Slater, Katherine Kelly, Simon Kent, Damian Lynch, Will Mellor, Gray O'Brien, Bhasker Patel, Jeremy Swift and Tom Turgoose.

*Eye roll*

This was an interesting listen, but also a cliche in basically every way possible:

A specialist who has to be dragged back into helping the police because *they're the best*? Check

A parent who is never home because they're too involved in the investigation? Check

A woman involved with police enforcement who faces sexist pig cops but *applause* shuts them down with her superior knowledge? Check

A psychologist who doesn't recognize *shock* their own child is a psychopath? Check

A woman who is romantically involved with her male detective partner (but of course doesn't have any sort of *scoff* girly, romantic feelings towards him)? Check

A serial killer who respects his psychologist (and includes them in their secret plot) because they can "almost keep up"? Check

A copy cat killer who is actually a *shock* part of the original crimes? Check

Overall, a good performance, an easy listen, but I could have used without all the tropes.

Strong performance of a compelling mystery

An excellent audio drama that will draw you in. A masterful tale with engaging characters. Well paced, you can enjoy it an episode at a time if you can resist the urge to binge --I couldn't.

The ending popped my eyes open!

A pretty typical British psychological murder mystery, but well acted, and the story lines kept me interested. The incessant reminder of what I was listening to was aggravating.

Excellent!

An interesting plot with a brilliant cast. I really disliked the daughter, but other than that, it was really good. I hope they make another one.

SAVE YOUR CREDITS - Predictable and melodramatic

Decided to give this a shot despite the not so great reviews. They were dead on - not worth a credit.

If I were to recommend this to someone I would tell them to listen to it as if it were a comedy instead of a drama because the accents and predictable storylines make it hard to take seriously.
