Hardy Bunken og Bertel Kratholm går i tjeneste hos tyskerne, Hardy fordi han er efterlyst i Ålborg i forbindelse med mordet på en servitrice, og Bertel stærkt inspireret af sine forældres fascination af nazismen. Hardy og Bertel kommer tilbage til Danmark for at gøre tjeneste i en lille sydsjællandsk by, men nytårsnat 1945 beslutter de sig for at desertere og søge mod deres hjemegn i Vendsyssel.
