Publisher's Summary

Shortlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize

From the number-one nationally best-selling author of By Gaslight, a novel of exquisite emotional force about love and art in the life of one of the great writers, reminiscent of Colm Tóibín's The Master, or Michael Cunningham's The Hours.

In sun-drenched Sicily, among the decadent Italian aristocracy of the late 1950s, Giuseppe Tomasi, the last prince of Lampedusa, struggles to complete the novel that will be his lasting legacy, The Leopard. With a firm devotion to the historical record, Lampedusa leaps effortlessly into the mind of the writer and inhabits the complicated heart of a man facing down the end of his life, struggling to make something of lasting worth, while there is still time.

Achingly beautiful and elegantly conceived, Steven Price's new novel is an intensely moving story of one man's awakening to the possibilities of life, intimately woven against the transformative power of a great work of art.

Best book of 2019

Fascinating story of the author behind The Leopard. The narration is gripping and it gives you the urge to rediscover the work itself.

Interesting enough

At first it's a bit hard to understand the main character but he is revealed over time. I enjoyed the depth of the "prince" and the fact that the story is a-typical in its revelation of his strengths and flaws. The many varied relationships among characters are relatable and interesting.

Creative and moving

This very creative novel by Steven Price, brilliantly read by Jonathan Aris, is a must-read for anyone familiar with Tomasi’s masterpiece. And great for retirees — perhaps there’s still time for... I hear Memories from Cats playing in the background. Could the author have told us more about The Leopard’s eventual publication?

A Wonderful Analysis of the life of a writer

The beginning of the book was rather boring, however with the given context and the characteristic appeals of the story, characters, and events, the book was heart-wrenching and emotionally full.
