Publisher's Summary
A violent rapist is attacking women, leaving them for dead on south London streets. When young policewoman Maeve Kerrigan responds to a domestic disturbance, she's horrified to stumble across the latest victim. But as a new recruit - and a female to boot - she'll have to face down not only her own nerves but rampant sexism from her colleagues if she wants to be taken seriously enough to even assist on the case.
International best seller Jane Casey takes Maeve back to her early days as a rookie police woman in Left for Dead - a brilliant novella sure to delight series fans and new listeners alike.

Passable Short Sample
Jane Casey certainly has an audience, but if this offering is typical for her Mystery-Thriller writing, her books are solidly "acceptable". The prose/vocabulary is creditable, the descriptions are vivid, and the crime is satisfyingly viscerally-affecting (violent & gory).
Admittedly, the plot is actually a well-delivered straightforward "find-the-killer", so it's hard to rate Casey's storycrafting from this sample.. but it's not terribly encouraging.
The narration from Sarah Coomes is similarly "adequate". Her diction, cadence, and tone are commendable and her voice-acting is excellent, but Coomes reads too slowly and with an annoying overenunciated breathy timbre.
I haven't read any 'Maeve Kerrigan' novels before - nor do I plan to. The protagonist strikes me as unlikable: an oversensitive policewoman with a chip on her shoulder. I strongly suspect that this book is designed to flesh out her character and explain why she does what she does: it should probably be read 3rd or 4th and looked at as a refresher for dedicated fans of the series (teasing relationships that will doubtless be explored, for example).
It's a reasonable first listen for readers who can get it as part of the 'Plus' initiative, too..but I would hesitate to spend money on it.
'Left For Dead' is adequately entertaining and the perfect length for a drive to the next town down the highway. At a minimum, it will provide a nice distraction.. and who knows? Maybe the character will grab you. 6/10 stars.
