About this listen

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

Hugo describes early 19th-century France with a sweeping power that gives his novel epic stature. Among the most famous chapters are the account of the battle of Waterloo and Valjean's flight through the Paris sewers.

a classic tale told well in translation

this early translation needs an educated ear. caveat emptor. those without a suitable command of language may miss much. the francais is read as anglais, but not as badly done as some.

Good story and narration

The key story itself is good but all the extra essays, songs, poems, letters, etc. really stretches it out. Excellent narration, even though it was recorded in 1996.

Brilliant

Sublime story & narration. It’s right up there with War & Peace. This is the pinnacle of 19th century storytelling.

Rambling French ranting

The first story with Jon Val Jon is a worth read. But this is 25% of the book. The rest is the authors options on politics, France and society. Terribly boring and a good 40hrs worth! The people that love this book or ones that have seen the play based on the first story of this book. The actual book is a colossal wordy collage of France that has nothing to do with a coherent story. There are eight chapters talking about nuns. 😬😑
