About this listen

Letters of John of the Cross, translated by David Lewis. Narrated by Denis Daly.

Much of the life of Spanish mystic John of the Cross (1542-1591) was dedicated to the establishment and management of monastic institutions. Among his responsibilities was the provision of spiritual direction to clerics and also to prominent lay Catholics.

The 18 letters in this collection cover a range of administrative and spiritual topics.

The underlying premise of the spiritual guidance given by the author can be found in his letter to the Religious of Veas: "The soul which is easily drawn to talk and converse with creatures pays little heed to the presence of God; for if it remembered Him, it would be soon drawn forcibly inwards, loving silence and avoiding all exterior conversation; as God wills that the soul should delight in Him, rather than in any creature, however pleasing and profitable it may be."
