A wide range of quick and easy exercises
"Letting Go Right Now" by Matthew Tomporowski draws on fields such as neuroscience and psychology as well as practices like mindfulness to help people recognize what holds them back and undertake a journey of personal healing.
Before discussing this book, I would like to acknowledge that I am related to the author. When I heard he had a second self-help book coming out, I wasn't sure what to expect. I certainly did not expect a manuscript that begins and ends with a life-changing moment as he travelled across the country. Nor did I anticipate a candid discussion about his divorce and the loss of a parent.
After talking about that event and his trip, he discusses four stages in personal growth and healing. First, Understanding What's Holding You Back focuses on triggers and negative thinking. Once you recognize those patterns, it's time for The Process of Letting Go. That section includes practical exercises and ideas "to eliminate what no longer serves you" (p. 86). This leads into Replacing the Old With the New, which describes how to build positive habits, self-compassion, and a growth mentality, The fourth section, Moving Forward With Confidence, considers how letting go is not a single event but a daily practice (p. 173).
I liked how the book provides activities which are quick and easy to understand. From mirror affirmations and gratitude journalling to breathing exercises or creating a trigger map, there are lots of options. There's even a bonus emergency pep talk! I also enjoyed the humorous anecdotes as well as Christopher Sapienza's wry, kindly, empathic narration.
Overall, "Letting Go Right Now" provides a smattering of ideas rather than an in-depth exploration of a particular approach. I felt it was an engaging read that fulfills the promise of its subtitle.
