None of us had a perfect childhood; we are all carrying around behaviors that don’t serve us—and may in fact be hurting us. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says licensed marriage and family therapist Vienna Pharaon. Our past might create our patterns, but we can change those patterns for the better...with the right tools. In The Origins of You, Pharaon has unlocked a healing process to help us understand our Family of Origin—the family and framework we grew up within—and examine what worked (and didn’t) in that system.

The bestselling author explains why self-acceptance is counterculture, how virtues can turn into dangerous vices, and why healing is a nonlinear process that leads to gentleness. The most liberating message might be, “We don't need to focus on ‘fixing’ ourselves. As we focus on living from our heart center, anything that’s not in alignment with that light will fall away.”

Story
How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur - renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer - describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know. Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change.

Story
It is nearly impossible to build healthy, sustainable bonds with others without first having a good relationship with yourself. To get along with others, we often alter our habits or subsume our unique personalities. By trying to transform or suppress our true selves, we erode our self-worth and self-knowledge. We begin to lose sight of who we really are and what we truly want. When are self-understanding and self-confidence are damaged, it ultimately hurts our relationships.

Publisher's Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An empathetic and wise book that will guide you on a journey toward a deeper understanding of self.”—Nedra Glover Tawwab, LCSW, New York Times bestselling author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace
A radically compassionate plan for turning inward and lifting the heaviness that prevents us from healing ourselves and the world, from the New York Times bestselling author of Clarity & Connection
“During the years when I had abandoned myself, my mind felt undeniably heavy. I knew I needed to find a clear way to help me feel lighter.”
yung pueblo’s path to deep healing began only after years of drug abuse had taken a toll on his mind and body. Searching for a way forward, he found that by honestly examining and addressing the anxieties and fears that he had been running away from, he no longer felt like a stranger inside of his heart and mind. And once he dedicated himself to meditation and trusting his intuition, he started to finally feel mentally lighter, with more love emerging from within. This was not an easy journey, and it's one that he is still on, but it showed him that real healing is possible.
In Lighter, yung pueblo demonstrates how we can all move forward in our healing, from learning self-compassion to letting go to becoming emotionally mature. As the heaviness falls away, our minds will finally stop feeling overburdened with tension and we’ll be able to reconnect with the present. And the world around us will hopefully become more inviting in crisp and newly vibrant ways. But these are just the first steps. As we grow stronger and expand our self-awareness, it’s our responsibility—and also part of the healing journey—to take actions to support the health and harmony of all people. The final section of Lighter shows how we can and must contribute to building a world that is no longer structurally harmful but, instead, structurally compassionate.
yung pueblo’s hope is that as more of us heal, our actions will become more intentional, our decisions will become more compassionate, our thinking will become clearer, and the future will become brighter.
What the critics say
“yung pueblo is the real deal—a modern sage and guiding light. In his new book, he beautifully illustrates how finding harmony within is the key to creating a progressive society built on compassion, clarity, and understanding. This is a book everyone must read, many times over.”—Vex King, #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Healing Is the New High
“yung pueblo teaches how to heal with compassion as the driving force. Lighter is an empathetic and wise book that will guide you on a journey toward a deeper understanding of self and help you make impactful changes within and in the world. yung pueblo created a core curriculum on how to heal despite your experiences with suffering.”—Nedra Glover Tawwab, LCSW, New York Times bestselling author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace
“A beautiful encouragement for tending your own heart: for learning and healing, for finding well-being, and being part of the solution for all you care about.”—Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart

Transformative
Really loved this book. Some points were known to me but always good reminders, but the way the information was delivered and especially some of the reflection questions st the end of each section really got me thinking, and honestly sometimes weeping, as I go through my own healing journey in the present, I will be relistening to this along the way as a way to recentre and remember the goals of healing and change along the way.

#1 New York Times best-sellers list
Now #1 New York Times best-sellers list, the kind of book you will enjoy reading endlessly during our life time of self-love awareness expansion, towards growing our authentic, genuine, real SELF. Hiding somewhere under all our self-defensive egocentric falsehoods, that we all create or adopt in using at some point, we CAN hopefully learn that OUR TIME truly is the only thing of any value one can share with another in learning our happiness of a healthier journey TOGETHER that is NOT a destination. This book helped me expand on a better understanding of real SELF within us all. The single most helpful reading i have had the chance encounter in helping me BEcome a happier, compassionate, wiser, loving authentic real self me, and the realness of another and the lack thereof. Essential reading for THRIVING HAPPY GROWTH, not just survival, solidifying a greater sense of direction within, something i always struggled to hold onto during my years of daily neuroses, panic attacks and severe emotional abreaction meltdowns that came with my neurodiversity that includes my high functioning ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as my lifetime transgender issues in self-actualization processing. Thank you to all who made the creation of this blessed self help material. Thank you. ~ Andyy
