Publisher's Summary

The extraordinary daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony seeks to reclaim her birthright in the first novel of an epic historical fiction trilogy from the New York Times best-selling author of America's First Daughter.

With both of her parents dead, Princess Selene and her two surviving brothers are left at the mercy of their captors, taken from Egypt and put on display as war trophies in Rome. Trapped in an empire that reviles her heritage and suspects her faith, Selene struggles for survival in a court of intrigue. She can't hide the hieroglyphics that carve themselves into her hands nor can she stop the emperor from using her powers for his own ends.

Faced with a new and ruthless Caesar who is obsessed with having a Cleopatra of his very own, Selene is determined to resurrect her mother's dreams and succeed where she failed. But there's no telling what success will cost her in a treacherous political game where the only rule is win or die.

Historical background could be better

The author's notes on this being close to the time of Jesus and on why they chose the topic due to how this Isis cult creation that likely was propagated by Princess Selene was good, but could have been added to with the biblical scholarship on christianity's links to these mystery cults more.

Not quite for me.

I think that this is written for an audience that is much younger than I am. While it's not my usual genre of book I did finish it with some enjoyment. I've read some superb historical fiction in the past of that time, of Rome and about Egypt, but this story was marred for me by the addition of magic, and some glaring imbalances in the story made it a bit flat. The narration influenced the cohesion and enjoyment as well. I places it felt rushed and the tone like reading a report.

Enjoyed it

Some of the wording choices do not fit the narrative (the word choices are too modern). Overall I enjoyed it but as someone who enjoys researching Egypt and Rome there were some liberties that the author took. Of course this was for the purposes of the story.

Overall I liked the voice actor but some of the choices she made for the different characters were not my favourite.

Have heard better

As good as the book is I have heard other stories of Princess Selene that I enjoyed way more. Not going to nit pick as each author has their own take.

Was really hoping to enjoy this series but could not get into it.

Could’ve done without

Not a great book. Premise was interesting but that’s about it. Writer’s story telling style was basic. Akin to reading a teenage girl’s diary.

Narrator was a bit better than the story.
