Publisher's Summary
Pain, horror, fear - these are the things that have comprised best-selling novelist Lance Metzger's life. His childhood remains a riddled wasteland of abuse by a sadistic father and abandonment by an apathetic mother. In turn his only refuge became his writing.
When Lance loses his ability to write and becomes haunted by a nightmare that he'd thought was buried, he is drawn inexplicably to a house on the shores of Lake Superior, where he finds his muse once again - but something is waiting for him when he arrives. Now he must unlock the devastating secrets that the house holds and uncover the mystery of his own broken past before he loses his sanity - and perhaps his soul.

"Glimpses" Of Genius
When Joe Hart dedicates himself to creepy, unsettling events & visceral horror imagery, he provides some pretty compelling stuff. Unfortunately, he spends faaaaar too much time setting up the main premise of the book: an emotionally-troubled author in the midst of a writer's block moving in to a "haunted" house with a past connected to his own genealogy.
In fact, it takes nearly half of the novel to introduce the scenario - with virtually no foreshadowing. The pacing is so bad that you are forgiven if you give up on it at some point in the first six hours of the book. If you have the patience, the payoff is considerable.. but Wow. The book is a slog.
Fortuitously for audiobook aficionados: Reader Neil Hellegers turns in a commendable narration performance. True, his interpretations of children are cringeworthy (his voice-acting is limited), but Tantor Audio Inc. did a praiseworthy job casting the project overall. Hellegers is solidly "above-average" on this recording.
Altogether, 'Lineage: A Supernatural Thriller' rates 6 stars out of 10. If Hart had been better able to play to his strengths, it would have been a noteworthy Horror book. As it stands, download it if you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu.. but spend your Credit elsewhere if they ask for one.

good
Solid 4. Not a great cover, but a great read. Compelling protagonist, interesting secondary characters and a tense and carefully crafted story. For a book in the very specific but strangely popular "writer gets writers block and moves into a haunted house" genre, it was surprisingly un-tropey.
I liked it.

So Overwritten.
I had to stop listening to this book because of the endless, boring detail that absolutely bogged down the essence of a story which, in my humble opinion, completely ruined what may have been compelling. As well, the narrator was mediocre at best. Oh well, it was free.
