Publisher's Summary
Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016
Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.
A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....
Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.
*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.
What the critics say
"The concepts in this production, based on a graphic novel, are perfectly executed by a full cast.... Kate Mulgrew leads the way with her perfect portrayal of an ancient grandmother with an evil streak." (AudioFile)

A very imaginative novel
A novel that I could not stop listening to.
The narrator was a perfect match to read Locke & Key.

Too inconsequentially heavy
It seemed to be a series of unfortunate events for the heck of it. At one point it just straight up clicked in my brain that I was not enjoying the listen - I was listening with the expectation of eventual satisfaction.
Look, I'm all for dark themes, but this series is mostly problem after problem with unsatisfactory resolutions given that part of the cause of the original problem is the incompetence/ignorance of the characters and thus their sudden victories seem entirely contrived. Okay, maybe I can't handle the only smart and/or detailed main character being the villain and the kid. Either way, I was not enjoying a lot of it neither intellectually nor emotionally.
The setting, mystery and background of the story are quite wonderful. There are parts that are quite the masterpiece. I just didn't like the in between bits. I wish they fleshed the good parts out more.
Joe Hill has worked on the Dark Tome podcast before, and I enjoyed their story in it much more wholly than Locke and Key. That podcast sent me here, in fact.
The performance is exceptional.

Listen while reading the comic!
I listened to the audiobook while reading along with the comic and really enjoyed the experience! The voice actors and music bring the comic pages to life in a multimedia experience that keeps true to and on pace with the pages.
Do be warned that there are some parts where you have to do some flipping back and forth in the books if you are trying to follow this version, because the audio tries to keep plotlines together and in as linear an order as possible. There are some awkward parts where the visual gags/information just aren't captured in audio and vice versa and some the audio drags on awkwardly trying to describe some of the splash pages/silent panels. Some language from the page is also modernized in this version.
But overall, the performances are stellar enough that I would combine the audio and visual formats again if I were to reread.

A little hard to listen to
The voices are really high and the music is at a much higher pitch. Spent a lot of time constantly adjusting volume as nothing was at the same level. A little cheesy too. Sometimes hard to follow

Exceptional Audiobook
Brilliantly performed with high production, this is a perfect audiobook for anyone who is or has been interested in this series. It's an incredible tale of grief, family, and imagination, and absolutely worth listening to.
The story of the Locke family is a dark and tragic one, with the death of the patriarch plunging the family into a world of mystery, hidden realms, and dark magic. Along the way, the family must grapple with grief, change, and their relationships with each other.
I love the characters. All of them are complex and distinct, with their own personal demons that they need to grapple with. There are many standouts and quite honestly, it was hard for me to pick a favorite character. The Locke family finds themselves in quite a bit of danger more often than not, so it was always tense to see how the characters endured against their many powerful enemies. This is a series that isn't afraid of pulling punches.
The creativity, emotion, and symbolism in Locke & Key's story combined with a truly excellent voice cast that pour their heart and soul into each performance elevate this among the rest. I enjoyed every second and felt my heartstrings get tugged at the end. Highly recommended for old and new fans, because this is not to be missed!

Why is this so popular?
Thought I would give this book a try since Netflix just picked it up but I am two hours into it and if only you could see the expression on my face. Best way to describe it is confusion....why is this so popular? It is difficult enough getting past the terrible Full Cast assembly but someone could not take the time to adjust volume levels correctly as I am constantly lowering and raising the volume. The Full Cast narration actually sounds exactly like a bad reenactment of a crime scene on one of those cheesy "based on a true story" detective/police crime shows.
I seriously doubt I'll make it through this book, I am very close to giving up and doesn't look like you can get refunds in Canada like you can with a US account. Not only is the voice acting annoying but this is a very disturbing book and here I thought it was going to be a young adult novel. It is quite unsettling to hear a child talk about how great it would be to be dead (what a morbid thought to put into someones mind).
