Story
From the time of the Norman Conquest to the present day, the New Forest, along England’s southern coast, has remained an almost mythical place. It is here that Saxon and Norman kings rode forth with their hunting parties, and where William the Conqueror’s son Rufus was mysteriously killed. The mighty oaks of the forest were used to build the ships for Admiral Nelson’s navy, and the fishermen who lived in Christchurch and Lymington helped Sir Francis Drake fight off the Spanish Armada.

In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

Love this book
I was born within the sound of Bow Bells making me a Cockney so it’s probably no surprise that I’ve read this book three times. Listening to Andrew bring the saga to life with his interpretation of the different characters throughout the ages the book covers was faultless. I am now looking for other books narrated by him!

An informative, well-written historical fiction
In my opinion, Londonis the best of Edward Rutherfurds’s numerous (and all excellent) historical fiction novels.
It follows a few fictional families through the ages, from prehistoric times to present day.

Simply the best
I have read/listened to hundreds upon hundreds of books, and this is by far my favorite I have ever read. The way author intertwines the families evolution throughout the centuries is spectacular and if you are a fan of British history it gives you a whole perspective of everyday life in London throughout its entire history viewing life through the eyes of different classes and stations. It covers from the mundane day to day activities and behaviours to seemingly first hand accounts of significant events that shaped the city, country, and world. A long go but the narrator keeps things exciting and is a welcome change to the dryness of most other narrators of historical stories. Worth every second. Could listen again and would highly recommend.

Love the story but the narrator ???
I am 81 years old and still not needing a hearing aid but this narrator drove me to distraction. I have read all of Rutherford’s novels and this is the best. However, the narrator has a terrible habit of ending his sentences in a whisper which I cannot hear. In doing this I’ve lost a good part of the story.
I stuck it out to the end because it is a great epic but the narrator ruined it for me. One day I’ll go back and listen again and maybe pick up more of the story....or read it for myself.
