Publisher's Summary

A lost colony planet, a perplexing murder, and a dogged homicide cop in this Audible Original story from best-selling author Larry Correia.

When the biggest colony ship in human history was sent to settle a paradise world, an accident hurtled it deep into uncharted space. A thousand light years from Earth, with no way home and no way to call for help, the colonists’ only hope for survival was the one barely habitable planet in range, a nightmare world they named Croatoan. Landing on the only five mountain peaks tall enough to rise above the lethal acid clouds, the settlers carved a civilization from the rock.

A hundred years later, Five Points has grown into a city of corruption and violence. With powerful corporations ruling the surface domes and criminal syndicates running the caverns below, murder is just the cost of doing business.

So when a Special Magistrate is found dissolving in a protein vat, it barely registers - until DCI Lutero Cade, the last honest cop in Five Points, catches the case. What he finds could threaten the colony’s very existence.

Or, at the very least, Cade himself.

Okay story but the narratior is overdoing it

Definitely some interesting story ideas, enough to keep me listening. It's definitely owes a lot to Bladerunner (movie more than the book). A future noir-style, gritty detective story. It seems a little off to me that at a point in the future when humans can open 'gates' up to travel millions of lightyears, they would still have things like guns with bullets, phones and stuff - which maybe was used to keep the feeling of an old film noir. It just took me out of the story a little.

The hardest part of this was the narrator's over-the-top performance trying to sound like a grizzled old cop. It was cringy at a lot of points.

As an Audible Plus fee listen, it's worth a couple of hours of you time, and does set up enough that it would be interesting to hear where further stories might go. But there is definitely better material in this genre.

An excellent Audio Book. I’ve not yet listened to any Audible Original that’s worthy of this book.

The gritty detectives voice, his determination and street smarts. His sidekick. An Alien Planet that was not conducive to life.
What a wonderful background to a gumshoe detective story set in the far future.

Enjoyed this short novel

This was a good space mystery however it leaves open more questions than answers. Looking forward to reading more about this world.

Loved it.

I'm not a sci-fi fan generally; I only bought it because LC is a sane and blunt voice and wanted to support him, so I was completely free to evaluate it on its own merits. I quite liked the grit and noir feel of this and I did enjoy the story, and the characters, and the narration. All of it together was a nice balance of enough details to draw one in without without stupid padding, and enough simplicity in presentation and characterization without stumbling into being too simple. Dark fun.
