D’origine métisse, Riel est né dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l’actuel Manitoba. Aîné d’une grande famille, il quitte les siens à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal. De retour chez lui 10 ans plus tard, Riel, par son charisme et son éducation, s’impose rapidement comme leader et s’engage dans la défense des Métis. Il réussira, non sans mal, à faire valoir plusieurs de leurs droits et contribuera à la création de la province du Manitoba, mais sera finalement jugé pour haute trahison et exécuté en 1885.

"Nous sommes tous des vers", avait modestement confié le jeune Winston à une amie, "mais je crois que moi, je suis un ver luisant !" Le mot n'est pas trop fort : Alexandre Dumas aurait pu inventer un personnage de ce genre, mais dans le cas de Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, la stricte réalité dépasse de très loin la fiction. Jusqu'à ses 26 ans, les aventures du jeune officier et du reporter évoquent immanquablement celles de Tintin, puis le personnage devient une synthèse de Clemenceau et de De Gaulle, l'humour et l'alcool en plus.
