"The reigning queen of STEM romance."—The Washington Post

An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!

Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the
New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.

The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.

Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.

Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

Excellent narrator

After over 200 books, I think this is my favourite narrator. The energy and emotion with which they tell the story is unmatched. The performance alone makes listening to this book worth your credit.

The story itself is also good, and enjoyable, though not amazing in its own right.

PHENOMENAL

Ali should not apologize for getting in the weeds of academic politics. As someone who works in a department of a university it helped me understand my job and appreciate the world of academia more. This has to be one of her best books yet. I wish I could discuss and gush over this book face to face with her. I loved every bit of it.

Oh My Gosh.

Like literally in love with Jack but also I meed a restraining order against him cuz he’s too perfect and that sort of stability would be scary… also Elsie’s really relatable. I agree with uncle Paul and would also have a 3some with them

Delightful and fresh

This was definitely not a story I’ve heard before, it really sounded like a great plot line.

As a woman, I understand the pressure to “people please” and “fit in” that society places on our gender. This is really a key driver in the main character’s struggle and it spoke to me. Women are always having to “fit” the expectations of people around us.

So who are you when you stop trying to meet those expectations?

Not only does the main character “get her man” in the end, but she satisfyingly breaks free of the social pressures, expectations and people holding her back from being her best self.

The draw between the characters is there and the spice is real.

So satisfying on many levels!

The performance is completely on point.

Physics in Love

As a former student of physics myself, I was thrilled to find a book set in physics academia. The spicy bits were well described, LOL, but the subplot of Elsie finding HERSELF was something I could really identify with.
