Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2014

From the Nobel Prize-winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude comes a masterly evocation of an unrequited passion so strong that it binds two people's lives together for more than half a century.

In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career, he whiles away the years in 622 affairs - yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he does so again.

With humorous sagacity and consummate craft, Gabriel García Márquez traces an exceptional half-century of unrequited love. Though it seems never to be conveniently contained, love flows through the novel in many wonderful guises - joyful, melancholy, enriching, and ever surprising.

Not for everybody

as I said it is not for everybody, and for me it was a book that stirred many emotions. I had dropped it mid way before and took it up once again after many years and I am glad that I was able to finish it. A philosophical story that tackles on stereotypes, definition of love, marriage (minus the over emphasis on sex), it is a wonderful story.

Awesome story! Didn't expect anything less from Gabriel. One of the best works I've listened to.

Love in Love, Cholera in Cholera

Pompous postulating and wingnut absolutisms. It doesn't fail to reach for the sky over and over again like the last book I listened to (Midnight's Children), but it assumes the sky. It's attempts to shock and juxtapose values are suffused with incessant assumptions about the meaning and existence of love. It's a classic romance with a god-narrator who is obsessed with sex and flaunts an over-confident pessimism. I liked it more than Midnight's Children.

Love in the Time of Cholera

A very deep book about a man in love with a woman he could not have. At least until both she and he were aged. A great deal of detail about how it was to live in that time. An interesting read.

Extremely Boring and hard to get into

I tried so many times to like this book. However my mind just wanders after listening for 5 minutes. Tediously boring made worse by the narrator.

Not what I expected

Not the great romance I was expecting. Very disappointed with the narrator. The story is not great either.
