Publisher's Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.

In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past - although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice - and for herself.

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.” - Booklist

Intense, suspenseful and emotionally stirring

Although the references to the thousands of missing children, particularly in the US, that parents suffer the loss of every year. This story is a small victory, under intensively distressing events. Everytime you learn more about how this little girl adapts and over comes tragedy, the more we can appreciate the importance of trust, family and good friends in a small town who come together to help.
As with all Ms. Hannah's stories, this one is no different, hope, courage, kindness and love prevail in the end.
This would make a wonderful book talk event.

Loved the first three quarters

I loved most of this book. It was enchanting and tugged at my heartstrings but the end started to drag, and then concluded abruptly. Overall I did enjoy the book, but was left feeling a little cut off, and somehow also over informed.

So good.

I don’t remember the last time a book made me cry. And this keeps you intrigued immediately and then absolutely on the edge of your seat. This is going to be a book I read every other year if not EVERY year, when it gets cold. It kinda gives 90s mystery vibes, and it’s very cozy at times as well too. Always check trigger warnings, of course. 💖💖💖

likely better to actually read the book

overall I like the concept of the storyline but had a hard time listening to the narrator and the various voices she tried to create. maybe books with baby talk are just better off read than listened to!

Narrator

This narrator was very and to the point of bring aggravating. At some point I wonder if she didn’t have a stutter. I will never listen to another book narrated by her.

Just an OK story

The beginning of this book really drew me in…however, the story dragged on and was not really very interesting.

Enjoyed and emotional

I enjoyed this story ver much. The narrator was great but I found that the sisters both were expressed in a wishy washy voice. Especially Ellie for being chief of police. I felt she could had been given a more confident voice. However, I loved peanut. Recommended read.

A story to remember

You can get lost in the life of this wee girl. Her living in the woods was scary and you wanted to go help
the people looking for her. I hated to wait for the story to get finished because I wanted her to stay with
"mummy". I loved this story.
