About this listen
More than a quarter-century before September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center was immortalized by an act of unprecedented daring and beauty. In August 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit boldly - and illegally - fixed a rope between the tops of the still-young Twin Towers, a quarter mile off the ground. At daybreak, thousands of spectators gathered to watch in awe and adulation as he traversed the rope a full eight times in the course of an hour. In Man on Wire, Petit recounts the six years he spent preparing for this achievement. It is a fitting tribute to those lost-but-not-forgotten symbols of human aspiration - the Twin Towers.

One of a kind story
There is no other tale like it, and it’s more fascinating than I imagined. I knew about the World Trade Centers wire-walker, but had no idea how he pulled it off. It was quite an elaborate endeavour involving many people, with many risks along the way. Told by the walker himself, it is a riveting story, and very well told. I was equally unaware of what happened afterwards, how Philippe went from arrest to celebrated folk hero, performing city-sanctioned walks and being given unprecedented access to the towers for life. He was invited to sign his name in indelible ink at the top of one.
The book was written after 9/11, so that aspect of the story comes full circle.
A delightful listen, highly recommended.
