About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.

At the age of 29, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

Total fan girl

I would pay to listen to Julia Whelan read the phone book. And it’s even better when it’s a Taylor Jenkins Reid novel. A match made in audiobook heaven!

Not for me but I can see the appeal

Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood but the storyline was a little cheesy and predictable. That being said, I love more recent books from this author.

Book club recommendation!!!

I have nothing bad to say about this novel - maybe I would in another life, but in this life … it’s perfection!

Wonderful story

Loved the storyline and the parallels of each life. I didn’t love the narrator when she used her “man” voice. It gave me all the feels and emotions that come with it.

Beautiful

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it was absolutely beautiful. The story, the narration, all of it. Never wanted to press pause!

So fun

I love Whalen and TJR together, so entertaining I always read one in between serious reads to lighten me up, inspire me and give me a little laugh. Whalen does the voices so well and the story here really gave me what I wanted from it. Woven in just enough to give you aha moments.

Good concept

I am a huge fan of Taylor, and the concept was interesting, but the character development was weak. Gabby needed more depth, everything surrounded Hannah making Gabby another token ‘best friend’ trope. Personal pet peeve of mine is when a characters race is only accounted for when they are a POC, it is a form of othering.

Love the parallel story!!!

It was a great book. I loved how everything unfolded. I wish I had more. I guess it was so good. I wanted it to go warm longer.

Lame and Confusing

This book is just not it for me. It’s confusing and doesn’t have any impact.
