About this listen
INSTANT #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
*SHORTLISTED FOR CANADA READS 2024*
In this breathtaking new novel from the #1 bestselling author of Every Summer After, a random connection sends two strangers on a daylong adventure where they make a promise one keeps and the other breaks, with life-changing effects.
Fern Brookbanks has wasted far too much of her adult life thinking about Will Baxter. She spent just twenty-four hours in her early twenties with the aggravatingly attractive, idealistic artist, a chance encounter that spiraled into a daylong adventure in Toronto. The timing was wrong, but their connection was undeniable: they shared every secret, every dream, and made a pact to meet one year later. Fern showed up. Will didn’t.
At thirty-two, Fern’s life doesn’t look at all how she once imagined it would. Instead of living in the city, Fern’s back home, running her mother’s Muskoka lakeside resort—something she vowed never to do. The place is in disarray, her ex-boyfriend’s the manager, and Fern doesn’t know where to begin.
She needs a plan—a lifeline. To her surprise, it comes in the form of Will, who arrives nine years too late, with a suitcase in tow and an offer to help on his lips. Will may be the only person who understands what Fern’s going through. But how could she possibly trust this expensive-suit wearing mirage who seems nothing like the young man she met all those years ago. Will is hiding something, and Fern’s not sure she wants to know what it is.
But ten years ago, Will Baxter rescued Fern. Can she do the same for him?

Story
In Téa Mutonji’s disarming debut story collection, a woman contemplates her Congolese traditions during a family wedding, a teenage girl looks for happiness inside a pack of cigarettes, a mother reconnects with her daughter through their shared interest in fish, and a young woman decides to shave her head in the waiting room of an abortion clinic. These punchy, sharply observed stories blur the lines between longing and choosing, exploring the narrator’s experience as an involuntary one.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade.

Story
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. Sam’s life is on track. She has the perfect doctor fiancé, Jack (his strict routines are a good thing, really), a great job in Manhattan (unless they fire her), and is about to tour a wedding venue near her family’s Long Island beach house. Everything should go to plan, yet the minute she arrives, Sam senses something is off. Wyatt is here. Her Wyatt. Good things happen at the lake. That’s what Alice’s grandmother says, and it’s true. Alice spent just one summer there at a cottage with Nan when she was seventeen—it’s where she took that photo, the one of three grinning teenagers in a yellow speedboat, the image that changed her life. Now Alice lives behind a lens. As a photographer, she’s most comfortable on the sidelines, letting other people shine. Lately though, she’s been itching for something more, and when Nan falls and breaks her hip, Alice comes up with a plan for them both: another summer in that magical place, Barry’s Bay.

She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children. Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen - especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. Slow but worth it
This book was a bit slow to get into. I liked the characters and concept from the jump but it just didn’t suck me in like some books do. However, the last two chapters make it all worth the read. And I never listen to anything after the epilogue but I listened to the “behind the book” and it made the book so much deeper and richer.

As Good As Her First Book
I thoroughly enjoyed Carley’s second book . I have to admit that I only read the first one because I vacation in Barry’s Bay every year since 1976 and have an emotional attachment to anything about the area . But I loved it so much that I decided to listen to her second book as well and it did not disappoint!
Thank you Carley , maybe we will see you at Wilno Tavern someday , but until then please keep writing!

Really wanted to love this ...
I was very excited to hear reference to Toronto and Muskoka (live in Toronto and grew up in cottage country) but I just could not get into this book. I found the story line mediocre. Maybe reading it would have been more captivating than listening to it. it is a very easy listen/read for the summer.

Disappointed
This was a romance. It may even be a very good romance, but I can’t tell. It’s just not my genre. I only listened because it was a Canada Reads finalist, so I thought it would be deeper, eventually, otherwise I would have stopped sooner. But it wasn’t. It never grabbed me, and I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the drama. I’m disappointed because it didn’t meet my Canada Reads expectations. I don’t mean to diss the author. I listened to the epilogue and was finally able to see where the author was going, which I respect. Please, if you like romances, give it a chance. Otherwise, consider my thoughts before you spend the time or credit.

Fantastic read, I couldn’t stop listening. Hearing local references made this book so relatable. The narrator was easy to listen too. I now need to read the authors other books
