About this listen

A balanced account of game changes, conflicts and ambitions. The fall from popular grace of the previously adulated brother of the heir to the British throne as a consequence of his marriage to a beautiful and dynamic Hollywood starlet of colour makes for fascinating listening in best-selling royal author Lady Colin Campbell's balanced account.

Lady Colin knows her royal history and psychology, and as the first seven years of her adult life were spent in the USA, she has a foot in both the American and British camps. With unique breadth of insight she goes behind the scenes, speaking to friends, relations, courtiers, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic to reveal the most unexpected royal story since the Abdication.

She highlights the dilemmas involved and the issues that lurk beneath the surface, as to why the couple decided to step down as senior royals. She analyses the implications of the actions of a young and ambitious couple in love with each other and with the empowering lure of fame and fortune.

She leads the listener through the maze of contradictions, revealing how Californian culture has influenced the couple's conduct. She exposes how they tried and failed to change the royal system by adapting it to their own needs and ambitions and, upon failing, how they decided to create a new system altogether.

More Fact than Fiction

Unlike many of the books out these days about this couple, Lady Colin Campbell delivers the goods! While she is obviously not a fan of the couple, she provides a relatively balanced, nuanced view of a romance with a nation that soured almost from the start. She gives the benefit of the doubt to the American Royal, perhaps even more that she gives to the man born into his role. But there are no "paint-dipped tails" or "peeing in the jungle" tales in this book. There are just whispers of the people around them and the warnings of what is to come, some of which are still playing out before our eyes.

I got the Audible version when it became available and found the narrator to be excellent. At times, Lady Colin seems to wander or repeat. Having heard her speak on occasion, she writes the way she talks and likely dictates her stories. Better editing would have resolved this, but that was the only thing that kept this from being a five across the board. If you want a trashy romance novel, read the other book. But if you want the "real story", then this is the book for you.

A must read

For those who have been following this story, this is a thorough update of the original book. For those who do not follow the Royal family, this is extremely informative and educational. As the title of this review states, this is "A must read" Wonderful work Lady C!

Thankful to know what truly happened.

This book was very insightful. It was a decently equal view for both the positives and negative’s of Meghan and Harry’s personality and traits.

However, after reading this book, I am extremely disappointed in both of them.

Written about then…. The way it’s turned out to be now.

I just finished this book. I loved the narrator. Her style and speed were well suited the the book. I enjoyed reading this at this time in 2023 to reflect on the way H and M have conducted themselves up till now. The author’s information on the couple then and their patterns of behaviour do seem to be a template for what we the public are witnessing now. I feel the author was fair and knowledgeable about her subject in this book. It is well researched, written in the signature style of the author.. which I love. Lady Campbell’s humour, directness, predictions, believable information make this a must read for those who have interest in the Duke and Duchess. Readers that do not appreciate lady Campbell’s style will however not favour this work.I do admit now in 2023 there is a unfortunate car crash like curiosity about the couple and that keeps our interest in them. I, like most people wish the subjects of this book to live their lives happily together on their terms.

Great writing (and reading)

This was such a great read. Lady Colin Campbell is a very compelling writer, and the narrator is wonderful. It's great to read something from someone with some insider information, and the book is relatively unbiased considering it does come from an aristocratic perspective.

Repetitive

Many words but not too much real behind the scenes content. Very repetitive and the content was much the same as the daily stuff you read on YouTube

Another bully platform

More vicious biased slander trying to destroy a lovely couple who only want to do good in this world.

Nothing but Meghan bashing.

I had not realized this was a bashing book. Lost my interest in chapter 1! Sadly, I'm too late to return it.

"Lady Colin Campbell" has internalized misogyny

"Lady Colin Campbell" presents the unfortunate combination of arrogance and profound ignorance and bias . I feel a bit sorry for her because she has such extreme internalized misogyny. The narrator's soothing voice is the only reason I ever listen to this audiobook, LOL. That is what got it the 3 stars for Performance. I would have given it 1 star otherwise.
