"None of this is real and all of it is true." (Jim Carrey)
Meet Jim Carrey. Sure, he's an insanely successful and beloved movie star drowning in wealth and privilege — but he's also lonely. Maybe past his prime. Maybe even...getting fat? He's tried diets, gurus, and cuddling with his military-grade Israeli guard dogs, but nothing seems to lift the cloud of emptiness and ennui. Even the sage advice of his best friend, actor, and dinosaur skull collector Nicolas Cage isn't enough to pull Carrey out of his slump.
But then Jim meets Georgie: ruthless ingénue, love of his life. And with the help of auteur screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, he has a role to play in a boundary-pushing new picture that may help him uncover a whole new side to himself — finally, his Oscar vehicle! Things are looking up!
But the universe has other plans.
Memoirs and Misinformation is a fearless semi-autobiographical novel, a deconstruction of persona. In it, Jim Carrey and Dana Vachon have fashioned a story about acting, Hollywood, agents, celebrity, privilege, friendship, romance, addiction to relevance, fear of personal erasure, our "one big soul", Canada, and a cataclysmic ending of the world — apocalypses within and without.
What the critics say
“A mad fever dream... Carrey and his collaborator Vachon pull out all the stops as their protagonist Jim Carrey careens from midlife blues through love and career complications toward the apocalypse...gems of comic fantasy and the nuggets of memoir gold.” (Kirkus)

You'll Laugh...just not how you might think.
As I listened to the third person omniscient narrator (Jeff Daniels) plunge headlong into Jim's life, at first I was taken aback. Is this going to be funny? The plot unfolds and this autobiography takes on a narrative approach that reveals incredible satirical moments. Some of my favourites were: the meditation group with famous celebrities that bordered on hilarity, Nick Cage, Anthony Hopkins and the image of Tommy Lee Jones seething with jealous anger over Jim's performance at the award ceremony...I think I almost crashed my car at that moment because I was laughing so hard. The writing is done well, with a flow and style that feels intellectual yet accessible. I’ve been on a celebrity autobiography kick lately: Steve Martin, Seth Rogan and Mathew Mconaghey…I never spell that right. This was the first autobiography written in third person and that contained such an intriguing and hilariously satirical plot line. I feel the rawness and openness that Carrey offers is refreshing and in many ways intertwined with brilliance. Don’t expect the typical Yuk Yuk’s that you’re used to regarding Jim’s physical humour…think Satire meets Intelligence. Have fun, sit back and let Jeff’s voice soothe your jangled nerves into a frenzy of humour, pain and insight.

In order for a rumor, to be true, there must be a grain of truth to it
What a fantastic book! Without spoiling anything at first, it was really hard to figure out what was fact, and what was fiction.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
A wild ride that oscillates between confusion and gleeful confusion. 10/10. Would smoke again.

Odd
Not what I had expected at all. Very strange. Disappointed for the most part but bits and pieces of the book were interesting.

Not what I expected.
Jeff Daniel's was a good narrator, but overall the book was confusing and disappointing as I am a big Jim Carrey fan. Definitely a fiction book.

A wild ride through the wilds of Jim Carrey’s mind
At first I didn’t know what to think and then the more I listened, the more I enjoyed listening to it, like great music.

Tragic yet surprisingly fun.
Reminded me of Naked Lunch though not quite as F#*&Ed up, with an ending inspired by Life of Pi. Would love to see this as a movie.

Loved it!
I have a feeling I am receiving this book as a birthday gift next week, but I couldn't wait so had to listen to it as soon as it came out! <3
This was a wonderful book to listen to during this quarantine! I highly admire Jim and all the work he has done as well as his worldview and spiritual path. Oh, and Jeff Daniels narrating it was so hypnotic and perfect! I laughed and cried with many of the stories, the mix between reality and fiction, along with those raw moments of vulnerability... Also enjoyed the allegory to hollywood and that strong desire for people to be remembered/immortalized... Thank you so much, Jim, for being such an inspiring energy! :)
