About this listen

“Men Against the Sea” is the second novel in “The Bounty Trilogy”, a series of novels that describe the voyage, mutiny, and subsequent adventures of the officers and crew of HMS Bounty during its voyage from Spithead on the English Channel to Tahiti in the South Pacific.

On April 28th, 1789, disaffected crewmen led by Lieutenant Fletcher Christian seized control of the Bounty somewhere about 30 miles south of the tropical island of Tofua. The ship’s captain, William Bligh, along with eighteen men loyal to him, were crowded onto the Bounty’s 20-foot launch, provided with food and water sufficient for five days, and set adrift. Bligh calculated that the ship’s launch would need to cross 3,500 miles of open water before reaching the nearest European settlement on the island of Dutch Timor. This great novel is based on the actual events as recorded by the men on the launch, including Bligh’s log. In one of history’s most awe-inspiring adventures, and against all odds, Bligh brought all but one of his men to safety. How he accomplished this is brilliantly described by Nordhoff and Hall in “Men Against the Sea.”

What the critics say

“This vigorous, artistic narrative remains incontestably the finest account of the Bounty story, and since many others have tried to write of this famous ship and its misadventures, the accomplishment of Nordhoff and Hall was not trivial. A grand book.” – James A. Michener
