Publisher's Summary

Finally! There is a mental-toughness book for young athletes!

Hey everyone,

Moses and Troy Horne here. Your mental-toughness guides! We know exactly how you feel. If you are reading this, you probably have a young athlete who struggles with in-game stress and maybe even sports performance anxiety. That is why this version was mostly written by Moses. As of the time of the writing of this book, Moses Horne is a 15-year-old elite athlete who can talk directly about the triumphs and struggles of working toward being mentally tough. This is the only book that I know of with input from an actual young athlete.

A lot of the heavy lifting was done by me, Troy Horne, his dad. I am here to help the parents understand how to help your kiddo navigate this mental-toughness journey. For more on that make sure that you pick up the parent's guide version of this book - Mental Toughness for Young Athletes: Eight Proven 5-Minute Mindset Exercises for Kids and Teens in Competitive Sports (Parent's Guide). It's super necessary. We know where you are, and we know how to help you help your young athlete find his or her mental fortitude.

In the past, we have purchased a lot of books about mental toughness in sports. To be honest, most of the books that we read were not a good fit for young athletes because they were either written for adults or not written for youth athletes in competitive sports. There is a difference.

Parents! Troy speaking: Since there wasn't anything out there for elite athletes, I did what every youth sports parent does when they want to help their kid. I started my own team! Just kidding! (I probably should have, but I didn't believe that I would be able to do it well. I lacked mental confidence in myself I guess. We talk about that in the parent's version of this book, too.)

We took the long journey of ups and downs. We struggled to help our young athlete find his mental toughness. It was rough! However, luckily along the way, we found the winning formula thanks to being able to talk with sports icons personally. We launched a podcast together, and on it we interviewed sports mental-toughness giants like Chauncey Billups, Tywanna Smith, Keiko Yoshimine, Earl Boykins, Jason Richardson, and Kobe Bryant!

We studied what they did and said based on our interviews, and we came up with a mental-toughness plan that worked! We followed their journey and their advice. We wrote down what worked for our young athlete, and we put it in this book so that you would be able to skip a lot of the struggle and failure part. No need for everyone to struggle right?

In this book we are going to share with you what we learned from talking to NBA athletes, NFL athletes, EuroLeague athletes, college coaches, and college athletes as well.

  • Does your child perform better in practice than they do when the game or when the "lights come on"?
  • Do they seem like they are losing their love for the game?
  • Do you want to help them?

If you answered yes to these questions, then you are in the right place.

Relatable, passionately narrated and practical helpful exercises

Kids will really appreciate the fact that Moses is narrating this book. It is well referenced and on top of relatable examples regardless of your personal sport there are practical exercises that don’t take a lot of time but over time will make a big difference. So many times kids hear sport is 90% mental yet they are expected to figure out how they master the mental side of things alone. That completely back fires. I was able to put into practice suggestions after the first chapter. Not all the examples apply to my daughter’sport but general principles apply to everyone. The exercises here will make a difference and Moses will help convince your kids to try them out without feeling overwhelmed. In the end it is their choice and he helps them see why they might like to make that choice. Julie

This book has really helped my kid!

My 11yo son loves this book and has listened to it about 5 times now because every time he listens to it he, "either learns something new, or is reminded of something he has forgotten." It has really helped him with his attitude and resilience with failure.

Only feedback is to please include the supplements with the audio book as I have gone to the referred website and entered in my email several times to get the 'free download' and it hasn't come yet!

Great for your young athletes

I put this audiobook on in the car and play it on the way to my kids sporting events. Always a great way to pump up your player!

Ending Podcast

The podcast at the end with the lady with the high voice. Who is she and why is she invited. Her voice is so annoying and hard to listen to. It was a good listen but all she did was scream and rap. It has nothing to do with the topic. The content was okay but the end turned the whole thing garbage.

Annoyed

Couldn’t make it through 15 min because the kid kept name dropping the whole time. Too bad. I really wanted to listen to what he had to say.
