Publisher's Summary

In picturesque Moonlight Cove, California, inexplicable deaths occur, and spine-tingling terror descends to this "edge of paradise". Growing numbers of residents harbor a secret so dark it is sure to cost even more lives.

Tessa Lockland comes to town to probe her sister's seemingly unprompted suicide. Independent and clever, she meets up with Sam Booker, an undercover FBI agent sent to Moonlight Cove to discover the truth behind the mysterious deaths.

They meet Harry Talbot, a wheelchair-bound veteran, who has seen things from his window that he was not meant to see. Together they begin to understand the depth of evil in Moonlight Cove. Chrissie Foster, a resourceful 11-year-old, running from parents who have suddenly changed and in whom darkness dwells, joins them. Together they make a stand against darkness and terror.

Narration is quite bad

The narrator is actually bad enough that it ruined the book for me. I thought that my audio file had been corrupted, I re-downloaded a few times before finding other reviews that mentioned the same thing.

He changes tempo randomly, slurs and stutters, doesn't change emotions whatsoever (he actually sounds excited the entire time, as if reading to a room full of children. Not fitting of Dean Koontz.).

I won't even review the story because it was as tainted by the reading.

Not his best; not his worst.

I have come to expect Dean Koontz novels to hit or miss.... Midnight being among the latter. The plot overly complicated, the characters stereotypical, the conclusion uninteresting and without surprise. Midnight reflects three bothersome elements to the Koontz's writing which are threaded throughout most of the author's fiction: predictably cliched characters; his propensity to be preachy in a mushy way; and the ending to his books which seem rushed and lackluster. Regarding narration, J. Charles isn't very good but I do admire his enthusiastic effort to do the best he can..
