About this listen

This is the story of Barbara and Larry Savage's sometimes dangerous, often zany, but ultimately rewarding 23,000-mile global bicycle odyssey, which took them through 25 countries in two years. Miles from Nowhere is an adventure not to be missed!

Along the way, these near-neophyte cyclists encountered warmhearted strangers eager to share food and shelter, bicycle-hating drivers who shoved them off the road, various wild animals (including a roof ape and an attack camel), sacred cows, rock-throwing Egyptians, overprotective Thai policeman, motherly New Zealanders, meteorological disasters, bodily indignities, and great personal joys. The stress of traveling together constantly for two years tested and ultimately strengthened the young couple's relationship.

As their trip ends, you'll find yourself yearning for Barbara and Larry to mount back up and keep pedaling. It's a story that makes you feel like you've grown right along with the author.

This book was worthy of more stars in the "overall" category, but the reader did such an appalling job when she attempted accents that there were many times when I quit listening and more than a few times when I wondered if I would ever go back to it. Canadians don't have a southern drawl, the French and Spanish don't have Eastern European accents, Indian people don't speak with Chinese accents. But the badly done Cockney she gave the Kiwis was the worst. She pretty much ruined this story for me, which is a shame. If you are considering listening to it do yourself a favour and buy the book.

The book is well written and felt like I was a part of journey alongside Barbara and Larry.
The only thing i could not connect to was how the countries like India or Nepal were described as backward. It possibly could have been so but ever since I have seen these places, i never saw them like that.
Glad the story was told. It surely is a fun journey.

This book is timeless and so enduring. Having traveled the world myself over many years ( not on a bicycle mind you) to similar places I could really relate to their adventures. I actually rode the Magic Bus from London to Athens in 1974! Barb'S descriptions of India, Egypt, and Europe were so to true to life I felt I was visiting again. I highly recommend this book if you like travel and adventure and different cultures. Bravo Barb Savage. I loved it !

Really great story. The narrator should not attempt accents- was sometimes painful to listen to.
