About this listen
A devastatingly frank memoir that tears open the past to examine how circumstances - and the choices we make - dictate the people we become.
Mistakes to Run With chronicles the turbulent life of Yasuko Thanh, from early childhood in the closest thing Victoria, BC, has to a slum, to teen years as a sex worker and, finally, to her emergence as an award-winning author.
As a child, Thanh embraced evangelical religion, only to rebel against it and her equally rigid parents, cutting herself, smoking, and shoplifting. At 15, the honour-roll runaway develops a taste for drugs and alcohol. After a stint in jail at 16, feeling utterly abandoned by her family, school, and society, Thanh meets the man who would become her pimp and falls in love.
The next chapter of her life takes Thanh to the streets of Vancouver, where she endures beatings, arrests, crack cocaine, and an unwanted pregnancy. The act of writing ultimately becomes a solace from her suffering. Leaving the sex trade, but refusing to settle on any one thing, Thanh forges a new life for herself, from dealing drugs in four languages to motherhood and a complicated marriage, and emerges as a successful writer.
But even as publication and awards bolster her, she remains haunted by her past.

not ideology
I enjoyed this book far more than I expected to. well written, at times painful, but always engaging this book the tails her journey through Street prostitution, drug addiction and mental health issues.
her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder really makes a lot of sense of her crippling pattern of insecurities and Rebellion. a lot of books that talk about escaping prostitution are ideological tracts, but this was generally free of that. I left reading this not knowing where she Stan's on issues relating to sex work policy, and I think that's a good thing.

Great read
It was a great.. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did find though that sometimes she jumped from one point to the next without explaining how the situation ended, so I was left sort of guessing. Maybe I just missed it though as I'm listening instead of reading the book.

Excellent book
This book was well written , well read and left me with a feeling that if this lady could overcome all that she had endured then I would have no problem succeeding In my life ahead of me. Also I have been seriously considering writing a book myself and this author has inspired me to write !!! Well done !

wanted to like it
I really wanted to like this novel but I felt like I was listening to some one read off a list of things that happened to her. I kept waiting for more of a story.
