About this listen

A woman's nightmarish past comes back to stalk her in this bone-chilling psychological thriller inspired by the Slender Man stabbing

As a 14-year-old girl in London, Alice survived a horrific stabbing attack by two classmates obsessed with Mister Tender, a graphic novel character created by Alice's own father. Now, a decade later and an ocean away, Alice is trying to focus on the present - but the past won't leave her alone. Someone knows far more than they should - not just about the night she's tried so hard to forget, but also deeply private details about Alice's life. Suddenly, the sinister Mister Tender is leaping off the page and into the real world, and he has his sights set on Alice.

In the vein of Alex Marwood's The Wicked Girls, Mister Tender's Girl is a harrowing psychological thriller about obsession, memory, survival - and how one appalling act can change the course of so many lives.

Conditionally Entertaining Suspense-Thriller

Carter Wilson presents a psychological exploration of a stalked woman that really requires readers to set aside logic. Making a woman who survived a murder attempt from child psychopaths inspired by a comic book character - and then having someone representing that fictional character track her down years later - is a bit of a stretch. Wilson is quite skilled at building tension, providing believable false leads, portraying realistic fear.. but struggles to make the whole scenario plausible. Having protagonist 'Alice Hill/Grey' turn her trauma into a hair-trigger fury - violently breaking the bones of anyone that annoys her - doesn't help (Who leaves old men laying bleeding in the street collecting their teeth and just walks away satisfied? I mean, who does that?). The end result of the author's efforts is an enjoyable tale IF you can suspend disbelief enough.

Saskia Marlevaald contributes to the "Meh" impression that I got from the book with a "decent" reading performance, too. Her diction, timbre, tone, and voice-acting are actually praiseworthy - but she takes maddeningly long pauses during the narration (it requires speeding playback to 1.20X just to make this recording tolerable). Recorded Books Inc. didn't drop the ball completely, but could easily have found a better reader for this project.

Altogether, I rate this audiobook 7 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' selection, it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons.. but spend your Credit on something else should they ask for one.
