About this listen
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK
Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.
“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter."" —Reese Witherspoon
Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.
High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.
Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.
With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

But Grace isn’t the only one with something to hide, and Rock Harbor isn’t just a sleepy vacation town. Story
A producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats, security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over her face.

Light and enjoyable
Kept me guessing to try and solve the mystery through the whole book. The end was drawn out a little bit, but it was still a very nice enjoyable light read for when you just want something to take your mind to another place.

Easy listening and intriguing
I enjoyed the matriarchal element of the story and how 3 generations of women come together to solve the mystery. like Agatha Christie meets Columbo.

Murder She Wrote vibes
Lana’s character is my favourite in this book. High class strong business woman becomes an amateur detective. I found myself enjoying the relationship side of this book more than the actual mystery of a murder.

Definitely a Gilmore Girls meets Murder Mystery vibe
And I’m here for it. What’s there not to love about Lana’s character, the stone cold Mother that’s yearning for thrill and the simple life of a Mother-Daughter duo who’s life gets rattled by a murder near their home. All the twists and turns keep you guessing and it’s all so much fun.
