About this listen
Motherhood is the true hero's journey - which is to say that it can be as harrowing as it is joyful, and enlightening as it is exhausting. For Jungian psychoanalyst Lisa Marchiano, this journey is not just an adventure of diaper bags and parent-teacher conferences, but one of intense self-discovery.
In Motherhood, Marchiano draws from a deep well of Jungian analysis and symbolic research to present a collection of fairytales, myths, and fables that evoke the spiritual arc of raising a child from infancy through adulthood.
Divided into three major segments similar to the stages of a hero's initiatory journey, (Descent, Sojourn, and Return), Motherhood charts how events like pregnancy, the calamities of childhood, and the empty-nest experience are all parts of an odyssey to which every mother receives an invitation. Here, Marchiano emphasizes that when you take up that invitation, it will lead to an adventure into the wild frontier of your own soul. And once you return from this inner journey, you'll possess the treasured knowledge need to clarify your values, embrace your disowned parts, and claim the mantle of motherhood in the full bloom of your empowerment.

A balm for your confused, confronting, paradoxical and lonely journey of motherhood
Loved the book with stories and analysis. Don’t skip the epilogue!! I will be rehearing it over and over when I need do. This Audiobook made me feel less alone and normalized a lot of my feelings as a new mom. I recommend it!!!

A must read for all mothers
This book is absolutely brilliant. The way Lisa intertwines psychoanalytical concepts with her own experiences, that of her clients and fairytales and myth is absolutely genius. The way motherhood is dissected and elevated is something new, that I haven’t seen before. My new favourite book on the topic.

Most astounding parenthood book I’ve read
Absolutely life-changing. This work is by far the best parent book I’ve read and I think it could be as applicable for fathers and grandparents as it could be mothers. Hope everyone will dive in, even when considering reparenting themselves.

Best book on motherhood I’ve ever read
I’ve read a lot of parenting and mothering books - this is without question the one I’ve found most valuable!! It rivals a few of my faves, but honestly, was just so profound and deep and entirely relatable. Her explanation of each fairy tale made sense on a gut level - and how she uses the fairy tales to make sense of various aspects of mothering is brilliant. So helpful, and validating. Plus the narration was excellent.

Every Mother deserves this book..
I wish this book was around after my 1st and most difficult child. I just finished listening to it as my 4th child and first daughter turns one next week. Divine timing really. Motherhood has connected me to the spiritual more than I could ever explain. This book explains that connection and more. It answered questions I've had for 9 years since becoming a mother. It made me feel seen and heard and understood. It helped me to understand why for the first 3 years of motherhood I was angry. Angry for what seemed like no reason at all. Lisa manages to bring forth everything we as mothers try to hide and shame away from. She helped me to overcome so much of what I have hidden away and pretended never happened. A much loved read that I will likely listen to again and again. And will share with my own daughter when the time is right.
