September 1938.

Hitler is determined to start a war. Chamberlain is desperate to preserve the peace.

The issue is to be decided in a city that will forever afterwards be notorious for what takes place there. Munich.

As Chamberlain’s plane judders across the Channel and the Fürher’s train steams relentlessly south from Berlin, two young men travel with secrets of their own. Hugh Legat is one of Chamberlain’s private secretaries, Paul Hartmann a German diplomat and member of the anti-Hitler resistance. Great friends at Oxford before Hitler came to power, they haven’t seen one another since they were last in Munich together six years earlier. Now, as the future of Europe hangs in the balance, their paths are destined to cross again.

When the stakes are this high, who are you willing to betray? Your friends, your family, your country or your conscience?

One of THE turning points of history. One can see many modern parallels. Great narration. Good suspense in the second half concerning the invented characters. Very informative true story concerning the real politicians and diplomats. I note one reviewer mentioned a missing chapter and this certainly explains a remark Chamberlain makes to Legat on the last morning in Munich. I thought I’d missed something during listening.

Highly recommend, especailly for fans of WW2 and Espionage Genres. Well told, though not an action packed thriller was definitely intriguing and suspensful for me!

6 pages at the end of chapter 20 (chapter 9 in the book - pages 263-268) are skipped. This is a very significant scene so I’m glad I was reading along at that point and not just listening.

Excellent but missing 6 pages

This was my first Robert Harris novel and it did not disappoint. Harris provides a view into the Munich Conference through awesome characters and an excellent plot line.

I have always viewed Chamberlain as kind of a coward that was afraid to confront Hitler but this novel shows Chamberlain in a light that I have never viewed him in before. He is portrayed as a man that did everything possible to avoid a war in Europe and used his best political tactics he had available to convince Hitler and his allies that war could be avoided.

Would recommend to any historical fiction fans and anyone who loves history!
