Publisher's Summary

Mike Browne, host of the popular Canadian podcast Dark Poutine, chronicles some of his all-time favourite stories of true crime and dark history from Canada and around the world.

Divided into four sections - Murders with a Twist, Perpetual Puzzles, The Madness of Crowds, and Notable Disasters - all the stories in this collection (except two) are brand new and haven’t been covered by the podcast.

In Murders with a Twist, Browne recounts seven true crime stories with atypical elements, including weird motives, unusual perpetrators and bizarre murder weapons. In one case, we meet a man who is willing to kill to possess a human voice. In another, two women play a deadly game to prove their love to each other.

Perpetual Puzzles covers six stories that remain unresolved and will leave you with more questions than answers. They include the archaeological find of the century, which turns out to be something far more sinister, as well as the discovery of a dead man on the beach with a mysterious clue in his pocket.

The Madness of Crowds reveals that murder and mayhem are sometimes a group effort. We meet two young Canadians who leave home one summer to find work and instead end up on a murder spree, and a bizarre California cult that asks its members to topple the Mormon church.

The book concludes with Notable Disasters, which describes some of the most tragic and deadly events in history, including the deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, as well as the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in London in June 2017.

The book includes a foreword by Alan R. Warren, best-selling true crime author and host of the House of Mystery Radio Show.

settle in for 25 stories of intrigue and mystery

Mike brings the same tenacity and compassion to these stories as he does with Dark Poutine, but you don't need to be a fan of the show to appreciate this book! With fresh takes on some of the more famous cases in the true crime realm, he also takes the listener down the path unexplored with some fascinating lesser known stories. There is something for everyone.

Murder Madness and Mayhem - Amazing!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Mike has a great voice and the stories he does are obviously well researched. I knew of several stories already but I learned a lot of details, which made them fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys non fiction as much as I do! The experience of listening rather than reading is fabulous too - so I can multitask!

So good!!

I love Mike Browne’s podcast and his book is just as awesome!! He has a way of telling tragic and sometimes brutal and gruesome tales with so much compassion for victims. I love that the focus is on people not gruesome details. Taking the time to try to finding who victims were before they were a headline, and bringing more understanding to both victims and (perpetrators when necessary). I recommend slowing down the speed of which this one plays just so you can make it last longer.

The weaver of fate

Mike has a great way of telling a story. Or as we may say in Bridgewater, "having a yarn." Yes, I know Mike and I'm very impressed with his work in this book, which I feel will be one of more.

The detail he weaves into the various tales of fate and mystery is impressive. His description of individuals and settings is reminiscent of radio theatre a century ago, which gives it a feeling rarely experienced today.

I must be honest, I did not see myself as a true crime fan but I may have just become one. Well done, my friend, be proud.

Great Education for this Dark Poutine Fan!

As a huge fan of Mike's Dark Poutine podcast, I really appreciated how much education I still got from this book.

I learned new things about Elisa Lam's case and the Dyatlov disaster and got a brand new education on Glen Taylor Helzer and the case of Catherine & Gwendolyn, the murderous nurses.

Just like his podcast, Mike's book is educational and respectful of the victims and their families--and his narration is compelling & captivating! A must listen for any true crime fan!

As a fan of Dark Poutine, I was excited to listen to Mike’s book! I love that he narrated this himself as his voice lends great to story telling. The stories were well presented, interesting, and engaging. 10/10 as always!
